Not only can you cast away anything, but: - casting away types unsafely is required for many common patterns in C, including any form of runtime polymorphism - basically anything involving numerics has a good chance of happily casting for y

Things like “danger,” “skill,” “knowledge,” and “safety” aren’t really part of license exams in the US. They’ll pretty much just give a license to anyone here, literally. It’s actually one of our bigger problems (it has big implications on

IMO, this even applies when replacing most C/C++: a lot of that code doesn’t need most of the benefits or C++ or Rust. Often, it’s better to replace it with simpler programs doing less work in Go or JavaScript or Python. I love Rust, b

I believe Skype for Business has been discontinued, but I may be wrong. Edit: I actually bothered to check and the EOL is 2021. New customers are directed to Teams. I used Teams at work, and it’s crap quality UX, but it does the job. For ch

If you haven’t seen Bazel, you should take a look. It’s definitely not as minimalist, but it has a very, very similar model for specifying the build. In me experience, it’s pretty easy to get going, and it makes it pretty hard to screw up a

If you haven’t seen yet, Twin Peaks got a third season back in 2017. It’s a lot more like Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire than the original show, but personally, I think it was one of the most amazing shows I ever watched :-)

An “OS thread” is the most basic part of the program that can actually do things. When it is blocked, it can’t do anything. OS threads can be expensive, so libraries try to only create a few OS threads. A “hot loop” (usually, I think, calle

Does Rayon use iterators, or just iterator-like combinators? I don’t think a for-loop would work with Rayon, would it? You can also definitely implement iterators using first-order functions: const iterate = array => { const

ime, what is called “political correctness” is often interpreted as “respecting others” by different people. You can disagree with what expectations they have for interpersonal respect, but I think that’s how the other side sees it.

Check out structural typing. I would say it’s the type system JavaScript uses for non-primitive values. The “dynamic” appearance is just that JavaScript doesn’t center the type system in its UX.

JS doesn’t have to do computation on a single language. Web workers an option, and I believe Node has additional tools as well. It definitely can’t compete with true threads for work that needs true threads, but you probably don’t have much

As someone who has worked a lot with both Qt and React at my current job, I feel that React is significantly easier for almost everyone. Qt’s complexity negates a lot of its benefits in most hands.

I tried porting some Qt code to iOS and Android a couple of years ago — I found the experience to be extremely lacking. I’m not a fan of Qt or C++, but I will admit it is at least a very pragmatic and efficient choice for Linux GUIs. It’s m

I would definitely call Qt a platform, just like Java is a platform (it actually has a lot of similarities to Java). The platform happens to run on multiple other, lower-level platforms.
