I'm not convinced that, for 99.9% of use cases, anonymity is a feature. I think it's far more likely that the easy anonymity that has been the default for much of the existence of the Internet has harmed society. I get downvoted w

I had a significant tic, and found profound relief through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I strongly recommend "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life".

You'd think a little bit of forethought would cause you to have done that at any point in the last few weeks since this shit-show started, just in case.

Any idea of significance has subtlety and complexity, both of which are anathema to Twitter. Rage, on the other hand, can be perfectly encapsulated in a few characters.

And your compensation choices are valuable information to Shopify and indicative of your "buy-in" to what they are doing....and therefore could be used against you.

I want to hear more about how advertising is a doomed business model. We've had advertising for centuries... But I'd love to know it was going away...

The people who decide bringing new life into this world is unethical will quickly be replaced those who think it _is_ ethical. I understand your reasoning, but "don't have kids" can never be the answer.

Just because we can imagine it going wrong doesn't mean it will go wrong or it must go wrong. The role of science fiction is to explore possible futures, not to make the future taboo. Do we need to be way more careful with how we desig

Bang on. To add fuel to the fire (heh), the fire mentioned by parent wasn’t perceived as deadly and then suddenly was safe. It was and is deadly unless the precautions our society has spent thousands of years developing are carefully follow

Yup. My slavish devotion to “personal responsibility” means I can’t even understand how decisions made at a corporation, insulated from the very personal responsibility I care so much about and powered by unlimited piles of cash can run hum

I remember playing around with the Serious Sam level editor. A buddy of mine made a map that was just a small hut in the middle and monster generators scattered over the next hill. Endless mindless hordes of monsters came over that hill and

People do change their mind, but almost never because of adversarial debate. So, "come with proof" seldom works. Unfortunately, you (and I) also never change our minds because of adversarial debate. It's easy to tell other pe

I think we will get to a point where trust will only come from face-to-face physical meetings. We won't be able to believe in Zoom calls, phone calls, nothing except face-to-face. Just like it was for millions of years before now.

Yup. Search reveals two or three relevant videos but from that point on the search results are indistinguishable from the regular feed. And I get the same video recommended to me all the time. Sometimes back to back!

All that geographically relevant advertising could go back to how it was before Facebook/Google became the only way to do it. It seem an easy-enough solution to me.
