I just moved to the apartment upstairs because it has a familiar floor-plan, is renovated, and has a slightly better view.

Well, that's a joke referring to the typical Computer Science jargon of calling them both Algol-like languages. I don't recall him saying that while I used to read that group, but I would have chuckled.

And for those wondering why IF was awkward, there was no ELSE until Fortran 77, and doing that with GOTOs was a little ugly.

I vaguely remember that they went back and drove more piles, somehow, until the building was stable that the exterior glass facade no longer shattered on a regular basis. However they did the work, it wasn't visible from the outside.

There are many points south of SF against the Bay where the solid ground is down far enough that they instead drive piles until they find enough resistance. Oracle's HQ is still standing. But the (East) Palo Alto 4 Seasons Hotel, whoop

It would be nicer if you had marked your edit where you made it; it took me a while to notice the postscript. Also, you could have mentioned that you made an edit in your reply. Thanks. I hope next time turns out better.

Can't you just hold your cellphone up to your ear? Use the cellphone accelerometer to figure out what noise to make. I'm sure this app would make at least dozens of dollars.

Thanks for the list, I see I didn't really miss anything. BTW, lots of HPC are (again) going for AMD. Hopefully I don't end up getting subpoenaed twice this round! It was a little painful last time.

That's a telling edit. It's easy to misconfigure a few machines, or have an OS update hurt performance of your entire fleet.

I used to have a small startup with over 50 servers per engineer. Tell me all about TCO and digital transformation, I really need to learn about that stuff.

Perhaps we could divide the statistics into "unnecessary servers Microsoft forced you to run" and "servers you actually need"?

As a user of many servers, I use very little Intel code other than what they've contributed to Linux. Am I missing out? I think I'm a pretty typical hyperscaler.
