The file system is the original "database". I solved an interview question recently using a few Linux utilities, pipes, and flat files. It was a bash one liner that impressed the interviewer, but then he asked me to solve it the "real" way.

I usually have 1-2 windows of documentation on one screen and 2-4 terminals open on another.[0] This allows me to prototype, compile, test, build, look up info with minimal window switching. The biggest advantage is never having to hunt for

25 minutes is too short, but I've found that a 90 / 15 minute cycle works for me. I highly recommend this Pomodoro extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/strict-pomodoro/cg... You set the minutes per cycle and what sites to

With today's tools it's not that difficult to sync your shell environment. Keep your config files in a private git repo and add a few lines to your .bashrc that does the following in the background: - git (pull|rebase|reset --hard) from

3D desktops are not at the responsiveness level of Windows or OS X despite improvements over the years. As a result, there is still a significant amount of Linux users using 2D desktops. For example, I'm using Gnome 3 fallback (i.e. classic

I do this all the time with my camera stuff. I'm an amateur photographer (did weddings part-time), but bring my camera bag everywhere. I'll walk up to a security guard and ask him for directions to the press area, making sure that my camera

Yes, if you want to get pedantic about it languages are separate from implementation. For example there's CPython, Cython, PyPy, Jython, IronPython. However, reality is that most languages' ecosystems and performances are tightly connected

"Fast" and "close" are subjective terms. That's a 50% increase for a few thousand function calls. PyPy uses JIT to improve Python run time speeds but it's still magnitudes slower than statically typed languages. I've upped n to 40 and rerun

No citation needed as long as you understand both languages' runtime stack. Python is an interpreted language that runs on top of a virtual machine (usually CPython). Types are determined at run time. .py -> .pyo* (bytecode) ->

That's one of the reasons Rust appealed to me more than Go. Go has a global mark and sweep GC. OTOH Rust has a thread local, optional GC.

A balanced approach is use trial work as a level 2 filter and pay the applicant contract rates for a day / week. If the person turns out to be a no hire, you managed to avoid an expensive false positive.
