Right, but the whole point of this thread is that the advantage Windows has is that it comes pre-installed.

I'm not sure I understand what your point is... Without Windows they probably would have been written for whatever else was most popular instead.

If it came pre-installed I don't see what the difference would be. Many people don't know how to do anything other than launch certain applications on Windows either.

It's not though, unless the new feature and existing features continue to exist as disjoint things. If the new feature subsumes the old ones, then you've reduced the number of features in the language.

Can you explain how this is relevant here?

I think there's still value in generic AST-level operations. Like expand selection and shrink selection. Or select around the current node vs select inside (whatever that means for the current node type).

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be easy to understand what studies are actually demonstrating, based on how often you see people making giant leaps to conclusions that don't really follow from study results.

Regardless of "health benefits", the phrase "you can feel" seems pretty relevant when it comes to what someone finds comfortable.

> Why does Rust standard library use libc? Because that's the stable public interface provided by pretty much every OS except Linux. On Linux, if you don't want to depend on the OS-supplied libc, you can use musl.

I don't think GP is arguing that's the best way to design an OS, just that interfacing with non-Linux Unixes is best done via libc, because that's the stable public interface.

This is a very flawed analogy.

I read past your first sentence, but ASCII is used by non English speaking countries for many things. Source code, for one.

> The very fact that UTF-8 itself discouraged from using the BOM is just so alien to me. Adding a BOM makes it incompatible with ASCII, which is one of the benefits of using UTF-8.

I think a lot of people have a fear of AI coding because they're worried that we will move from a world where nobody understands how the whole system works, to a world where nobody knows how any of it works.

Yes, LLMs are more like offline code generators that can't be reliably re-run. So the very first step of producing the code is "easy", but after that you have lost that ease, and have to read and maintain the larger generated

This feels like a strawman. Most criticisms of AI for coding are about how overblown the claimed benefits are, not that there are no benefits.

Not to mention how hard it is to actually get what you want out of it. The image might be pretty, and kinda sorta what you asked for. But if you need something specific, trying to get AI to generate it is like pulling teeth.
