The brush head on my Sonicare toothbrush recently "expired" and a yellow led started blinking. Later, it started making a particular vibration pattern when switched on. Now, I'm waiting for it to refuse to start up entirely

The software part of nand2tetris is quite a bit harder than the hardware part. I didn’t bother to buy the book for the first part, but I needed it for the second part. SICP doesn’t really teach hardware, and it teaches you a sophisticated f

Nand2tetris is much more advanced than Petzold. But yes, there’s a lot more to learn after that.

You’ve convinced yourself that you can never do it. It may interest you to know that the greatest mathematicians also feel that they are groping and may never accomplish what they are trying to do. Two comments: notice that the equations wr

And then you learn that most differential equations are not explicitly solvable, and the world is actually coded in partial differential equations, anyway.

So, our methods for addition are nearly the same. I like your seven. Eight is just add ten and subtract two, and nine is subtract one. But the thing is, doing addition and subtraction should be as fluid as multiplication. Your dots and my p

Half of three and 5/8 inches: one and 5/16 plus 8/16: one and 13/16. Boom. That’s faster than dividing decimals in your head. It’s a useful system for residential construction, fast and accurate within about 0.031 inch.

And that’s why the system of inches and fractions is better than it seems. Very easy to divide by two, which is a very common need.

For another lark, go to Kahn Academy and check out how he teaches arithmetic up to third grade. You have to look really hard to find addition and multiplication tables. They’re there, with the rather lame comment that they’re good to know.
