Copyright is not on “information”, It’s on the tangible expression (i.e., the actual words). “Transformative use” is a defense in copyright infringement.

I don’t know, Claude is very good at writing that utterly useless kind of unit test where every dependency is mocked out and the test is just the inverted dual of the original code. 100% coverage, nothing tested.

I have been using Unix since 1983, and Linux since version <1.0, and I would respectfully suggest that the author has missed the point of Docker. However, if you want to use a shell script for setup instead of a Dockerfile, and don’t min

Now the MCP kool-aid is about how we’re finally going to make that work, because the computer on either end can literally read the field descriptions and intuit the interaction. MCP uses LLMs to supply the magic that the WSDL folks never ad

I’m not comparing anything blindly; that is in fact the exact opposite of my advice. Nor am I saying all big hypes are equivalent, just that there’s always a big hype about something , and you need a strategy to stay levelheaded about them

Were you around for the OOP craze? It definitely affected a lot of peoples’ day job. I mean, quite a few people use C++ and Java, no? In my list I didn’t even mention the internet, the web, smartphones, and the cloud, all of which had a ver

I know with only 5 years experience this may not be obvious, but this is only the first of many “revolutionary” technologies making everyone around you lose their minds that you’ll have to deal with in your career. Like every other such tec

I’m very good at one thing (thank goodness), but I do some other things that I’m not good at, to remind myself how nice it feels to just do something without the pressure of having to be good at it. I also think being a beginner at other th

Yeah, that's why I said "not much" difference. I don't think it's much, because LLMs do quite well generating JSON without turning on constrained output mode, and I can't remember them ever messing up a bash

MCP is literally the same as giving an LLM a set of man page summaries and a very limited shell over HTTP. It’s just in a different syntax (JSON instead of man macros and CLI args). It would be better for MCP to deliver function definitions

Well, with MCP you’re giving textual instructions to Claude in hopes that it correctly generates a tool call for you. It’s not like tool calls have access to some secret deterministic mode of the LLM; it’s still just text. To an LLM there’s

For one thing, what you learned can stop working when you switch to a new model, or just a newer version of the “same” model.

`-S` is a disassembler , or an assembly generator . You definitely want that when developing a compiler. But an assembler that goes the other direction, that’s entirely optional.

In theory, Anaconda solves the next higher level of the Python package management nightmare, namely knowing what versions are compatible with each other. But that could presumably be done on top of uv.

In the world of LEDs, a switched-mode power supply with regulated output current is called a "constant current driver". I assume that's what this calls "DC dimming".

As with so many other things the executive branch is doing right now, it doesn’t have exclusive power to do this. Congress sets the rules for how procurement works.
