Given this is rewinding to the 1970s, I expected a mention of CSP [0], or Transputers [1], or systolic arrays [2], or Connection Machines [3], or... The history wasn't quite as one-dimensional as this makes it seem. [0] https:/&#

That's how I read it at first too, but I think the more probable interpretation is that it was a fix to a project that has 4.5M lines of code.

The SolveIt tool [0] has a simple but brilliant feature I now want in all LLM tools: a fully editable transcript. In particular, you can edit the previous LLM responses. This lets you fix the lingering effect of a bad response without havin

Cols 73-80 were sometimes used for sequence numbers so when you spilled your cards on the floor you could run them through the sorting machine. This may help you get the feel (pick the COBOL card at the top). [0] For an even more authentic

"Try to solve the issue" is the key phrase there. In my experience you're generally wrong about how long it will take to solve any nontrivial software problem, and that's exactly what's hard about results-based plan

I must have missed something, because this seems to say you do capacity and headcount planning and publicly commit to the work before you know how to solve the problem ? This seems like the “draw the rest of the owl” part of this process…

Yes, that’s the empirical observation method and the source of ground truth for model training.

To answer the question in the article, I’m pretty sure Windows Explorer (and probably File Manager before that) has sorted filenames this way for at least 30 years.

It’s not really specific to systemd, it’s about cgroups in the kernel. If your code is running as a systemd unit so it gets its own cgroup, there you are.

This is exactly why RightSignature is an expensive SaaS contract and not just something you can self host for cheap: providing somebody credible to testify which document was actually signed.

Replace “coding agent” with “new developer on the team” and this article could be from anytime in the last 50 years. The thing is, a coding agent acts like a newly-arrived developer every time you start it.

The term was "excited", not "successful and effective". The excitement for Obama vs. Biden was not even close. ("Yes we can!" vs. "Let's elect our doddering but normal 80ish white guy, not the crazy 8

Be careful with those "no one" and "everyone" words. I think everyone I know who is a software engineer and has experience working with LLMs is quite clear on this. People who aren't SWEs, people who aren't in

To clarify my comment: the challenge is how to make room to follow this advice as a manager, when your own manager doesn’t share these values. In particular, when visibly bending rules, or spending any time coaching “nonperforming” subordin

What’s not mentioned here is the challenge quite a few aspiring leaders will face: how to act like a leader when your manager is a manager.

What’s really bugging me is they didn’t think it was interesting to even touch on that point in the big announcement. Contrast Apple making a big deal about private cloud compute before it even really does anything.

It is astonishing that the word “privacy” appears zero times in this announcement. There have been repeated controversies over exactly how Google sees just the URL I visit. Now they want to see the entire contents of multiple browser tabs

All VPNs do the same thing: give remote access to another network. Plenty of companies use full tunnels so access to the general internet goes through the company network. That happens to bypass content restrictions using exactly the same m

The pnpm version of this is persistent. You approve the package once, and regular install works thereafter. Which is nice.

I think the only way you can consider iOS “amateurish” is according to a ridiculously high standard for phone software that Apple itself is responsible for normalizing.
