I have friends and family living in Portland who got a close-up view of the BLM/Antifa activity there. People were afraid to go downtown. Women were afraid to go alone to the market or out for a walk. I know some people who were never

Original, old version with "Pentel 5" on the cap. It's had heavy use but shows no sign of it except tiny marks on the finish. I did buy a second one recently to have a different color. (Midlife crisis, I guess.) The new one i

I was going to say a pair of quality scissors. Someone gave me a nice pair for Christmas when I was a teenager. At the time, I was thoroughly unimpressed with the boring gift, but 40-odd years later it's still in my desk and regularly

I've read that a single-payer system is very unlikely in the USA, due to political forces. The tremendous inefficiency of the American medical system increases costs, but also provides more jobs, and those job-holders vote.

Are the problems the same for all branches of healthcare? The conditions of hospital emergency rooms have been a topic of concern for many years. But there is also the matter of worsening conditions at small clinics, especially since the im

I think the LO Math formula language is nearly an exact implementation of eqn. I prefer eqn to LaTeX because it is easier to remember/write/read, but complex equations tend to take some fiddling to avoid ambiguities.

This is interesting. If I understand correctly, European housing evolved from open to closed kitchens during the same period that American housing went in the other direction. A friend of mine in Korea has an apartment with both solutions.

There was a big change over the 1950s in how people held their pens, as we shifted from fountain pens to ballpoints. You can see in pre-1950 movies how people held their pens (and pencils) less vertically. A fountain pen will encourage you
