Both Windows 11 and modern macOS are slow as shit now. The other day I clicked the Notifications settings in the outhouse they call a Settings app on my Mac and it took a solid 3 seconds to render the UI. And behind me, was a G4 Cube that c

I'm all for anti-trust and anti-monopoly but christ alive an operating system vendor gatekeeping their kernel is literally the whole point of being an operating system vendor. Braindead regulation.

Preview can no longer directly open .ps files. For shorter man pages, I use the Terminal apps "Man Page" profile which you can get to by right clicking the command name, and selecting "View man page". Then, scroll to the

Or just half height the left and right keys? It’s what Apple used to do before they tried this crap design on the touchbar MacBooks, then went to after they realized their mistake.

We’re stuck with plenty of non-optimal stuff because of path dependency and historical baggage. So what? Propose something better. Show that the benefits of following the happy path of historical baggage don’t outweigh the outrageously “arc

Jobs initially did not want to come back to Apple. Apple bought NeXTSTEP because between it and BeOS, Jean-Louis Gassee overplayed his hand and was asking way too much money for the acquisition. Apple then defaulted to NeXT. Jobs thought

I have my notifications for Slack and Outlook turned off. I get a Dock tile badge, and Slack does ping my wrist via smartwatch, but not much else. Most emails I get are not vitally important, nor do most of the things I get on Slack immedia

Jonathan Levin’s three part series “*OS Internals” is that update, but they stopped working on and writing about Darwin around Catalina.

Around the time of Snow Leopard, it was rumored. I assume the Oracle buyout of Sun around the same time had a big part in killing that particular idea.

Launchd 2.0 changed the syntax for the launchctl commands (and made it closed source as it now heavily relies on XPC.Framework). The man page for launchctl lays it all out. Load and unload became "bootstrap" and "bootout"

I'll take the well documented (man launchd.plist) XML property list (well, XML rendered, they're usually in binary) any day over some flat unstructured nonsense. I loathe INI syntax.

Apparently the flex on the 16 is bad enough that the pogo pin connector for the keyboard deck loses contact every time you pick the laptop up.

The arrow key layout makes Framework a non-starter for me. Full height L and R keys sucked shit on the touchbar MacBook Pros so bad that even Apple acquiesced to common sense and went back to the inverted T.

I'd much rather work with plain-text human readable property list files with straightforward `defaults` commands than the hive of Hell called the registry.

Right click the window title and you get a drop down navigation menu of every folder in the hierarchy up to the "/Volumes/$VOLUME" the folder is on. I'd kill for this on Windows or any mainstream Linux DE.

It's what they have available in the SwiftUI toolbox of "shitty widgets from mobile operating systems" though. Thankfully, that is also somehow the future of UI frameworks on all of their platforms!

Using search as a UI is admitting the UI sucks. It is indicative of a failure, not a solution in and of itself.
