Sounds like this is your problem. The interviewing is more of a sympton rather than a cause. I'm not the US, but I find it hard to imagine it is much different in Chicago to where I am in Northern England - companies are dying to find

Its entirely possible to get a junior ruby on rails job outside of london earning 30k, even 35k is not unheard of for a junior. Just go on any of the big job sites, search "Junior Ruby on Rails" in your area and take a look at wha

It really seems like every thread asking anything remotely personal (career, moving to another city, work/life balance etc.) is met with the answer "Sure you don't have depression? Go see a therapist."!

You expressed what I was trying to get at so perfectly and so much better than I ever did. This is what I'm talking about. Not just "Hey can I see your codebase? Oh, you don't have 100% test coverage and I've seen some v

It doesn't necessarily mean they have puritanical standards. But for me it would offer a glimpse into what its like to be a developer at a company. Like, does the company tell developers to just "make it work" in the quickest

Another point I would add is - choose your next job (after the break) wisely. Just like working for large corporations, startups have their own set of downsides. I wouldn't say they have fewer downsides - just different ones. You can f

There are different interpretations of what FIRE is. FIRE in the sense of saving money in order to be less reliant on potentially unfulfilling jobs is certainly a good idea. However, FIRE as some kind of end-goal to be achieved by all means

Can you give a real world example of glueing "together a bunch of Free Open Source offerings"? I've heard the idea that thats all software engineers really do before but it doesn't seem realistic at all.
