AFAIK, Google Code Search was written by Russ Cox, who also wrote this: http://swtch.com/~rsc/regexp/regexp1.html My guess, back when I was doing code search at Apple, was that he was actually scanning all the docs with his fast regexp, w

Nope. Favrd doesn't show you what your friends are favoriting, which is why I made Tweeteorites. Also, I recommend people you should follow.

"so it's easier to surf on an existing brand instead" -- sure, but it's still unethical. Just because you can make a quick buck by impersonating someone else, doesn't mean you get carte blanche to do so.

The paper is here: http://ideas.repec.org/p/sba/wpaper/05bwmk.html He's generalizing from banking industry data from 1984-1997, which seems like a tenuous proposition. Recent events suggest the risk in the banking industry was not properl

I wrote a Jabber client for OS X public beta back in 2000. It was a horrendous pain in the ass. I was also on the IMPP working group list for a few years. The big standout problem with XMPP is "XML streaming", which is fairly difficult to h

It depends on which group or division you're in. Some let you do it as long as it's "under the radar", others strictly forbid it. If you made the app and got it on the store before you started working at Apple, they're generally fine with t

This is fantastic! I could see myself paying for the ability to set up feeds to share with other people during an event. It's also nice to see Cappuccino being used for something outside of 280 North. :)

Jamie worked at Apple. So did I. So did the guys who did the iReddit app. We've all had rejections, and it's not like nobody at Apple knows who we are.

I second the recommendation for Rotee. Fantastic, and right down the street from Toronado. Memphis Minnie's is great, too. ... and, hah, the reference was not missed by someone with the last name Wooster ;)

The advantage the Valley has isn't so much a collection of discrete items, it's more of a gestalt. I'm a believer in geography influencing thought, so let's start there. The weather is fantastic and there are plenty of awesome things to do

Sure. Make an app that stores a very large amount of data. A good example would be spidering web data (unstructured), parsing some structure from it, and storing it in a database. Then, do some analysis on it, expose it to the web, etc. The
