Apple fans often justify the prices with this argument, but in reality, there is no reason to buy a machine directly comparable in all aspects, just the ones I care about. And that can be had for a fraction of the cost. It's unlikely t

Google open source stuff, true, but their development practices leave much to be desired, and in some cases seem designed to limit the usefulness of the source. Chromium source is a nightmare to build, and requires random, specific versions

Yes, this gesture is actually amazingly better than pinch-to-zoom, my only annoyance with it at present is that Android Firefox doesn't implement it - the only app on the entire platform that doesnt have it. No idea why they think it&#

Sites with static header bars like this one need to die. Vertical space is a horrible thing to steal, given that most of the world are using 16:9 monitors. Even worse when they're applied in on mobiles / responsive-design.

I find it laughable that they discuss the design or function of anything, whilst having the heaviest, slowest, most tracking laden shitheap of a site. It does not even scroll smoothly on any version of Android - an unbelievable acheivement.

If you tried pentadactyl / vimperator extensions for Firefox I'd be surprised if you found anything you couldn't program that you can acheve in uzbl.

This is patently untrue, as I subscribe to the exact same filter rulesets in uBlock, and it makes a dramatic, incredible difference to the browser's performance.

Yep, this is worlds faster for me than mousing over and clicking on tabs. Is vimperator still actively developed and compatible with the latest Firefox? I switched over to the fork, Pentadactyl some years ago.

You're kidding right? Vimperator and the much better fork Pentadactyl have been around for years on Firefox, and implement everything Vimium does and more, in a much more reliable way. Every single control interface is available, and s

uBlock is now available on Firefox too, and makes an even more dramatic difference in performance. I really don't know what you're talking about - Chrome is a dog after ~10 tabs are opened, uses crazy memory and becomes unusable f

XMonad is nice, but the haskell stuff makes it a chore. There is a great tiling WM called SpectrWM https://opensource.conformal.com/wiki/spectrwm that is a re-implementation of Xmonad in C, with a sane text config file

Please note: These problems don't crop up in non-rolling distros nearly as much. The transitions are held off, managed and only rolled out for new major versions of a distro. There are benefits to running Arch, but 'just works wit

KDE mainly has a a lack of decision making by the devs, & a lack of taste: the default theming, icons & panels are all fugly, and it takes a world of configuration work to make it look reasonable. The appearance options are so compl

Not just that, but useable, well thought out configuration, a few custom packages, whatever kernel is required to make a bunch more hardware work OOTB and some taste applied, something that's sorely lacking in many linux distros.

You don't need a special, weird distro to run openbox, just use Ubuntu or Debian or Fedora unless you're a masochist. In the case of Lubuntu, LXDE use the openbox window manager anyway, so even without touching apt-get you can log

Didn't GNOME almost go bust last year and hold an emergency donation drive, due entirely to granting too many paid internships (or similar) to people who aren't established GNOME developers, or even programmers?

Gnome shell has support for HiDPI scaling buried in the Gnome Tweak Tool settings. Sadly, you can mess yourself up if you go exploring in there, see a slider, wonder what it does and give it a go. On a non-HiDPI display anyway!

I can't dispute Qt becoming more popular for apps, and even DEs, but I still find that Qt apps AND all the Qt DEs on linux and BSD are horrifically ugly by default. That is harming adoption of Qt more than anything. It's likely ju
