For the less "sciency" science of Generative Linguistics, there is another arxiv.org-style repository at http://ling.auf.net/lingbuzz . People in this scientific community are quite aware of the advantages that these kind of open repositor

I think there is a bit of a hype, and people specifically try to deemphasize any relation to AI promises. IMHO, many things that were once associated with statistics are now rather referred to as machine learning, and the range of applicati

In fact, it has been shown that there are languages that have syntactic constructions which are context-sensitive (in a generative linguistic PoV. cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chomsky_hierarchy ). For example Swiss German variants ( ht

I find it interesting that people say Lua is a "simple" language, as if that's a flaw. Also, simple in which respect? To optimise? To parse? Note that this is no fanboyism. It's just that these performance claims are mostly phony anyways. H

That's why I like the !g option. If for whatever reason DDG does not seem to "get" what I want (probably because of me being trained to "google it") I can easily search with Google while leaving DDG as default search. Granted, I'm using it

I guess that's in part because it's even more difficult to (manually) transcribe speech into articulatory-phonetic elements based on the acoustic signal (laryngeal gestures?? Clearly they are there in articulation, but their acoustic correl

The concept of phonemes isn't undisputed either. When analyzing actual speech it becomes clear that there are no real steady states, but much coarticulation between the "segments". Of course, part of it could be attributed to the fact that

The changes due to GPLv3 (non-discriminatory patent licence etc.) seem to be incompatible with the interests of BSD people [1] as well as perhaps Apple, who is the main sponsor. [1] http://wiki.freebsd.org/BuildingFreeBSDWithClang

I recommend the following. Don't know why, but after I read a biography on Oppenheimer I just had to read this too. Aspray, William (1990) John von Neumann and the origins of modern computing. MIT Press. ( http://www.amazon.com/Neumann-Orig

Quite an interesting read. Another resource I used when I tried to delve into transforms and DSP was "The Scientist and Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing" (the whole book is available for free at http://www.dspguide.com/ ). Thi

There are of course other ideas: Secure Login with voice prints; Paid Content; Voting Lines; you name it. There's no such thing as voice prints. Period. Even the FBI states that voice prints are no conclusive evidence for speaker identity
