Yeah, the distinction between fleeting, intrusive thoughts and ongoing things you're afraid to mention is important. The important thing about things like telling your in-laws you don't like marzipan though is that these are the sorts of t

It isn't easy to be honest but I think that it's dangerous to do this sort of thing. Just because it's wrong to lie doesn't mean every truth should be voiced; knowing when to hold your tongue is an important skill. It might have been hone

What I ended up doing was having vim save backups and temp files to ~/.vim/backup and ~/.vim/tmp by adding this to my .vimrc: set backupdir=~/.vim/backup set directory=~/.vim/tmp Of course these can also be relative paths so yo

Likewise. Also, I don't like highly saturated colors. I've tried a few different color schemes and while I did like Solarized Dark I keep coming back to Zenburn[1] for its muted, low contrast palette. I haven't found anything better. [1]

When the author shows the output of "which grep" it shows the path "/opt/local/bin/grep"; "/opt" is typically for additional installations of software. I haven't used SmartOS myself but my best guess is someone installed GNU grep manually

It's a motion command that means from the beginning of the selected area to the end. It's really two different commands ("'<" and "'>") and there is a good description of them in the vim help (":help '<" will bring you there).

You also execute a selection with ":w !sh". For example, if I have a line that says 'echo "Hello, world!"' I can select the line with Shift-V and then ":w !sh" to execute the line in the shell. Works with other interpreters too so ":w !pe

Probably because it's an informal short form of "Technology." It does seem kind of weird as I'm used to seeing "Tech" used as a word in its own right but it's the likely reason why they did it.

I think we agree then. The (to most people) unfamiliar syntax and programming paradigm are certainly barriers to entry. It's not what people expect and I doubt most people writing plugins for programs want to do so in unfamiliar territory

While it's true that Guile isn't exactly pervasive as an extension language I can name two projects off the top of my head that do use it as their scripting language: LilyPond[1] and gEDA[2]. I haven't actually done anything with that ca

I'm currently only in school but I've never felt awkward doing so in public. It's not like you have to sit cross-legged or anything to meditate. Keeping a good posture can help with meditation but it's really an entirely mental thing. If

There is a dead comment here that mentions meditation and as this is my main method for taking breaks I thought I'd share (as I doubt the comment is dead for mentioning it). When I find I'm stressing over a project too much I just put what

There seems to be a false dichotomy being made between hands on education and the use of technology in the classroom that bothers me a bit; why should they be separated? I see no reason why a collaborative, hands on approach to education i

I recently ordered a lot of parts for a project I'm working on and the low price of the LaunchPad made adding one to my order pretty much a no-brainer. Ends up this is a very nice little board. It's definitely less 'friendly' than the Ard

That's why the usage changes to a struct pointer at that point. The struct pointer just maps parts of an existing data structure (like a video file) to its labels.

Maybe my understanding of pride is flawed but let me put it another way. By holding an opinion or expectation of oneself (or another) you're setting yourself up for disappointment in the case that the opinion or expectation is challenged.

I essentially agree with you but it is important to understand that pride has its failings, even without being what I would consider excessive. By being proud you put yourself in the position of having your pride wounded. This is distin

I don't really have much of a media setup actually. I have my laptop and a phone I use to listen to music a lot but the server just happens to be in a central, permanent location and can therefore just be left plugged into some speakers.

It's really nothing special but I thought I'd post about it as Perl Dancer really ended up being a joy to work with. I've heard so much about Node.js and played around with it for awhile but for some reason I just felt like I was fighting

It isn't hard to just put a fresh coat of gesso on a painted canvas; There really isn't much reason to waste canvas as the new paint will cover it up anyway (as the fact that it took x-rays to find this one displays).
