We are wary of the issue of dependency as well. As you point out, there are ways of mitigating the risk, and we are making it a top priority: 1. Stability and security will be maintained by a gradual roll-out and a user-driven testing phas

We are definitely looking at startups for now, expecting that finding success with startups will naturally lead to interest from larger enterprises. What I'm hoping to emphasize (and maybe I haven't done that enough) is that startups who ar

That's a good point. We're trying to disrupt the existing API platform market by being leaner and faster. Putting some Windsoc code on Github hasn't been ruled out, either. I think that assuming that for-profit vendors would never consid

I think there are important differences between libraries and platforms. 1. Libraries are static, with versioning and upgrades, whereas platforms are real-time. 2. Libraries are based on a one-time usage, whereas platforms depend on providi

I've always imagined that this is why Quora mentions the voters for a question. Another aspect to that display of votes is that it shows up in the list of a users activities. Clicking on a profile could display the articles and comments t

I wonder if there's a point where the talent wars in the Bay Area could actually affect pg's view that the Valley is the best place for a startup. I know that Jason Calacanis has talked about how it might now make sense to do your developm

Lloyd, I'm not sure if it's just the machine I'm on (XP with Firefox 3.6.15), but I'm having a lot of trouble reading your text. Either way, exciting news, and I look forward to seeing what you guys have planned.

I think the headline is perfectly suitable. I may use the same when I finally write my blog post "Embedly invented Windsoc [our startup]". And I don't think it would be the only time Fred Wilson has inspired new endeavors.

I think the site explains things much better now. It took me two visits to realize how cool Embedly was; I can't remember if that was from version 1 or 2.

I find this "where you went to school" concept to be the most contentious aspect of YC selection. I'd be interested to see some numbers on how many YC founders are from the "top-tier" schools vs. other places. Maybe that should be the nex

I think in your listing you've alluded to two possibilities right there: 1) an app that combines free/social and pro, and 2) an app that allows for distributed photos rather than the centralized model. It looks to me like there's still roo

Anyone wanting to build the next Flickr, let us know. We're looking to provide the tools to tie such a product to existing social graphs, and to handle migrating photos, lists and feedback to the next big social photo service. E-mail me (l

Personally, I believe the secret to social circles is building mechanisms to allow users to better control their current social networks, as opposed to hoping for wholesale migration. Is part of your plan to allow people to continue to use

I think there are two different issues: 1) sharing sensitive information with the wrong people, and 2) sharing types of information with people who don't care to read it I think the first issue is solved by defaulting to a smaller circle, l

Besides not being a subject matter expert, I don't have any evidence to support this assertion: It feels like you're looking to get involved in an industry that's being disrupted (unless e-mail newsletters are going to continue in their cur

I've e-mailed some whom I've already met, but I guess I've always approached it as I would speaking to investors, that cold pitches don't work. And I wonder what would happen if all 1600 applicants did the same.

Thank you for your feedback. There are competitors providing something similar, but not in the way we think developers require. They're also more focused on selling to large corporations rather than working with smaller ventures.

Barring a new remote dining edition of Grubwithus, I'll have to wait for the Winnipeg dinners for YC alumni. :) But in all seriousness, I'd love it if someone would consider taking a glance at our application. People who should know have b

On a related note, we're looking for a student to help us with our startup on the LAUNCH PAD. The third person we had for our team can't make it to SF and we're hoping to fill her place with someone who wants to be a part of the action. So
