I was in fact thinking of such common uses as the loop macro. > But the one thing that makes macros irreplaceable is the fact that they can operate at compile-time. "Sufficiently smart compiler" is the standard strawman argument. It's

Eh, in lazily-evaluated languages such Haskell, there is much less need for macros.

You've heard representatives of him complaining. You've actually heard nothing from him. His supporters obviously don't know that he's innocent, so they're sensibly not saying he is. People can't know he did it, they too should sensibly

Of course it's relevant to that judgement. Whether he and his girlfriend were right to take in and support this guy, and the reasonableness of the rest of the group in cutting off contact do in fact depend on what this guy did. The thing is

Fair enough -- there's no real need to know whether your friends were being unreasonable, or you were, only that it was enough to cause a huge rift.

To my mind, that response really depends on details such as "what sort of 'trouble with the law'?".

In both cases they are right too: the people creating the messed-up market (government via drug laws) and (airlines via schedules) are creating incentives that have built-in externalities.

An argument by symmetry is that something shouldn't change when some irrelevant bit is changed -- such as the identity of the actors. Yes, the preconditions for using "If I X then Y" when trying to argue that "when someone else X', then Y'

Arguments by symmetry are incredibly powerful and useful. Why do you think they don't get to the heart of things? (Granted, X must be chosen so that it is a fair comparison, but when it's not, that choice is what should be attacked, not t

I've always hated that saying. Absence of evidence is indeed evidence of absence, in situations where you would expect such evidence. It's absence of proof that isn't proof of absence.

Even when you can't have a _proof_ of associativity in the type, it's perfectly reasonable to document the associativity requirement in types -- e.g. the Monoid typeclass in Haskell.

Sure, but I'm still going to want to sweeten food in moderation, and it appears that tilting towards glucose in doing so is better. (Though glucose is less sweet, possibly meaning I'll use more, and that's worth watching out for.)
