I wasn't talking about the US in particular, I'm from Europe in fact. I pretty much agree with all your points: surveillance overreach is unacceptable, police power abuse is disgusting, mandatory private health insurance is unethi

Well put. What strikes me as strange is that somehow a lot of people associate your train of thought there with some kind of "socialism" whereas it's just plain common sense (free market supporting) pragmatism.

Are these works (esp the latter) accessible to people with no economics background, but a decent foundation in maths (calculus & algebra) and basic statistics (distributions etc)?

Cool, now you need a proper domain :-)

If you compare it to the gargantuan that is an actual production compiler, it sure is tiny.

Yup. What pisses me off is that they're so expensive to compute :-) Not in this data set of course, but if you do any kind of image processing ...

If you want to divulge: what's the best algorithm for generating Lichtenberg patterns?

Yeah that's more correct than twelve twenty-day months. In my locale, wages are expressed monthly so I'm a bit more used to roughly divide by twenty, for instance when calculating the relative cost of daycare.

I liked Elon Musk's note on the space elevator; he basically said "we should look at it once we have a bridge from Los Angeles to Tokyo, because that's far easier to build".

If leave for taking care of your kids is "unwanted", you should not be having kids. That counts for both parents. I can understand the tradeoff can be undesirable, but the tradeoff ought be between wanted money and wanted leave.

I think that's merely a matter of scale. The analog equivalent to a computer game is a video game, or playing a sport. Vice versa, there are plenty of "problems solved with the help of a computer" that simply cannot be solved

I don't see where I said the code can't be different in style. I said that I don't see how the code is somehow more important in the end product. No non-programmer gamer has ever cared one bit about what the code looks like,
