I think the argument can be made that the invention of the £Tightrope Support Scaffolding (whatever) made Learning How To Walk A Tightrope significantly easier. Programmer in, Application out. But you are right of course about the down

Nonsense. One can build a mulit-user database system in a few days. That would have taken months just 20 years ago.

That's not how I interpret it. The light-speed constraint isn't just about preventing matter to move faster than light, it's about information traveling faster than light. Picturing it like FTL communication being just an engineering prob

People typically say "the galaxy is big, so it's unlikely", which is not necessarily true. You need no more than a few tens of thousands of years to colonize a significant part of the galaxy, and it's not unthinkable many societies have had

I actually had that memory problem - with canvas - in Chrome rather than in Firefox: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=20067 It was fixed at some point though.

It's not a German thing. It's the same across Europe, certainly in countries that don't have a popularly elected head of state (the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, ...). Maybe it's just a Presidential thing? An election with one winner is pro

Unfortunately, canvas is ridiculously slow in FF3 in general. It's depressing... I built an isometric game in javascript+canvas, paid people to draw neat pixel graphics, but eventually dropped the project because of the performance. In Chro

I disagree with the view that introducing more "system" in the code is a waste of time. I do agree with another poster in this thread, that it would be a lot better if these kinds of constructs weren't baked into the language, but were inst

I'm sorry, but I fail to see what's wrong about that interface. It's perfectly in keeping with the rest of the Java language. Usin duck typing would be a horrible idea, since Java uses interfaces for type information on similar syntactic su

Except that if you interpret that literally, pretty much any program is a compiler. I can translate a text file in the "ASCII language" to the "UTF-8 language" with Notepad++, for instance.

That's just too general a comment, in my opinion. Saying "java is too slow for a startup" is like saying "Windows is too primitive for a startup". What if you're making Windows-specific desktop software? Or are we only allowed to talk about

I don't get why some people think null pointer exceptions are such a huge problem. Just apply design-by-contract in the right places and you're fine.

Can somebody explain to me why articles on complexity are careless with the term "Traveling Salesman Problem" (TSP)? To me, TSP means "find the shortest route visiting these cities once". That is not a problem that's in NP, since there's no
