Modeling a domain right is deceptively hard, and to me is one of the primary skills of our profession. Teaching what OO and inheritance mean is not the same thing as modeling a domain.

My nitpick about EnemySpaceship: whether an entity is enemy or not should not be part of its type but part of its state and/or logic. I know it's "just an example" but to me this thread is about whether arguably incorrect examples are bad

I don't understand how a driver implementation is an instance. I can imagine the HPDriver class having completely different code than the CanonDriver class. For a realistic version of this example, consider JDBC driver implementations.

Not if your assets are functional , such as a procedurally generated heightmap. Then they take up next to no memory. But you can't do that efficiently for a tree, I think.

You're right. The player confusion thing was already fixed in Diablo 2. You had offline and online characters. Their public understood the concept back then, so why wouldn't they understand it now?

Not if it's a scalable thing, i.e. you can get a "decent" conversion in a short time, and only do the full-scale conversions for milestone builds.

"polygons for everything else" would mean you integrate two completely different rendering methods in one pipeline. I won't say that's impossible, but it sure sounds non-trivial .

Amusing read, but the "leaves scars" part is completely unsubstantiated in the text itself, except for a vague allusion in the last paragraph.
