I'm working in Windows (employer's choice) and need to process some huge data files on the desktop. Perl (Strawberry Perl for Windows) is much faster than native Powershell (or CMD) scripts. A few Perl one-liners and I have 2 GB

"Bare bones" seems to be a good thing for Perl. I use Strawberry Perl on Windows and it is orders of magnitude faster than Powershell for processing large files of text strings using regular expressions. I hope the addition of a &

This could be an answer as to why Netflix comes up reliably when all the other streaming services in my experience (Hulu, Disney, HBO Max, Amazon Prime) can take many multiples of time to initialize and deliver a stable stream.

My seat control is a physical button—a giant bar that allows me to slide the seat in less than a second. Or in the newer model, giant bar for horizontal and giant lever for vertical. My in-laws' Jaguar has preprogrammed settings on th

Our 2009 Honda Fit has a gloriously button-face radio with a giant knob that's primarily for volume, but can serve a few other (and harder to access) functions. It's absolutely the easiest radio to use, kind of like a FIsher Pric

Fifty-one. Ha. I am 62, with salt and pepper hair that just crossed about the 50-50 line, and beard that's about 75% gray. My current job started in September 2001, and because of the grounded airspace that month I was offered remote

After twenty-plus years of remote work, I've seen everything in this article. In some cases, the leave or be laid-off incentive was relocation to a favored city rather than back to an office. When shutdown happened in 2020, executives

Interesting story. I have a love/hate relationship with Powershell. I was proficient in the CMD batch language, but decided to develop a set of SQL scripts in Powershell. With the object integration, it's a good enviornment for

A rule encompassing "pap smear" and "over 65" data fields is encoded right here in the OP comment. Aren't these kinds of rules and relationships what "deep learning" is supposed to suss out, automatically

You're a good husband. I did the same for my wife, and her 2012 core I7 HP Elitebook acted like it was ten years younger. But I went a step further: the mother-in-law. She had a lower grade I3 laptop from around 2008 that took 20 min

Part of Microsoft's problem is its immense attack surface. For every instance of a server or network router running a Linux-based OS that requires deep tech knowledge just to log in, there are dozens or even hundreds of Microsoft desk

I kept reading, because Windows seems to have survived and though I wouldn't call Jobs' prediction pure snake oil, I think the idea that tablets would wipe out the keyboard computer never came to pass.

In the 10 years between 2011 and 2021, the only computing development to make my jaw drop was the SSD (well, maybe LCD multi monitors, too). I just upgraded a 2009 vintage AMD desktop that was headed for recycling with an SSD, and it'
