What does that mail really mean? Does the patent grant extend to end users of Hadoop, or just the Apache foundation? What about users who patch their Hadoop? Is it revocable? I'm sure there is good will here, but the system is disgusting.

Guile being LGPL allows its code to be _included_ into other LGPL software. Other than that it's the same, just a bit simpler to think about.

That used to be the case, up to Guile 1.6. Guile 1.8 is LGPLv2+, and 2.0 (next month?) is LGPLv3+. The only (?) common license that is incompatible with LGPLv3+ is ironically GPLv2 (without +).

Shh, don't tell ;) Guile is licensed under the LGPL, by the way. In a normal dynamically-linked environment, the only restriction this imposes on you is the requirement to redistribute any modifications to Guile itself. You probably knew th

There are many possibilities. SXML is the one I use. You need to use a semi-structured editor, like paredit on emacs, to get all of the advantages, though. Otherwise as you mention you'll be grovelling for the closing paren, when the machin

Stallman has done lots of lovely work. Now he does some OK thinking. Just let him be :) In my case, one must recognize that the GNU manifesto was also impractical. This totally might not work, but I think the concerns are valid, and the imp

The networking concerns (Metcalfe's law and all that) are definitely a problem. I don't think that an autonomous network could start with facebook; it would have to build up to that kind of application through iterative development and refi

Git with privacy is a bit hard. Imagine that you determine that 123456abcde is a the SHA-1 for a bomb-making cookbook. Well then you just monitor the net for requests for that hash, and you see who's making bombs. Tor-type privacy is also p

Anyone here who knows what a closure is can fix their language implementation. It is really not that complicated. I have no idea why you are talking about cars. It is totally irrelevant. Andy, GNU Guile maintainer. [Edit: downmods? I though

Fix your language implementation: a debugger should have access to a closure's captured state.

The poster is Guy Steele, who when implementing Scheme, found out that his implementation of objects (actors) was actually the same as his implementation of closures. [Edit: the poster is actually Anton van Straaten, replying to Steele]

Ah, that is why you really want Guile, which will allow your users to choose their extension language! Heh, OK, Guile is not quite there yet. You can stop laughing now :)

This makes me sad. PLT folk are great Scheme researchers and practitioners; now I fear their work and conversations will turn ever-more inward. OTOH I can't blame them for wanting to leave the current Scheme governance story behind.

Close is not enough -- part of the attraction of s-expressions is that they are part of the language. Thus you can use the language's escaping mechanisms, or put the escaping in your sxml->xml filter. Preserving XML escapes is not actua

I have read the paper before, and it's certainly right -- but Gabriel never claimed that the fib benchmark was anything other than a microbenchmark of certain aspects of a system. For example, when discussing the TAK microbenchmark, he says
