Really, I do. "Oversee" can be used in a sentence as a verb without the connotation. But when I see "oversee.net" -- the noun -- I think "overseer", and "overseer" is not a word that I can hear without thinking "slavery".

I enjoyed the article; a bit fluffy, but fun. However, oversee.net? The thing that comes to mind directly is "overseer", in the southern slaveocracy sense. (I say this as one who grew up in the southern US.) What an unfortunate name!

I like your site's readability. I also like the body font. It might be my default text font, dunno. But it seems that the lines of <li> elements are oddly compressed.

Indeed! I liked Wimmer's notes on SSA in HotSpot too, though for other reasons. Too bad there were no slides for the GCC experience report.

Remarkable. Congratulations, clojure folk, for a fairly mainstream Lisp coup. [Edit: Also, props to the Heroku folk for doing something a bit off the beaten path. I'm sure clojure is lovely, but it wasn't the "obvious" next thing to work

Cute. The Boehm-Demers-Weiser collector has GC_reachable_here for this reason. Guile has scm_remember_upto_here since before it switched to libgc. I'm sure other systems have their things too. That said, I like Handle, the RAII thing tha

I think ceyusa was referring to the elision of bytecode as an intermediate step. Interestingly though, my assertion that V8 kept around the AST was wrong: it keeps around the source, and re-parses as needed. So maybe it's JavaScript that

I think you just didn't enable readline. See: http://www.gnu.org/software/guile/manual/html_node/Readline.... Guile's REPL is among the best, I think. It's all documented here: http://www.gnu.org/software/guile/manual/html_node/Using-G

To me it's a bit more surprising: it's a statement expression, containing a nested function, then we take the address of that nested function. Having that series of operations produce something useful is unexpected, to say the least. It's n

I have no love for callback-based programming, but assuming you want to do it (node.js), you really need closures, which Java does not have.

The question is ill-posed. In Europe there is a legal concept of moral rights, which does not exist in the US.

It's a terrible format (25 things? really?), but I still fell for it, and it's true: math does need more space donkeys.

Dunno. I've found with __builtin_expect() in GCC, the code corresponding to an unlikely branch is placed at the end of the interpreter body, even after all the other instructions, which is probably as good as you can do icache-wise. I'd h

What wonderful writing this was. I have been really pleased with some of these more pop articles recently: the Dan Plan one and the Snider huffpost piece being two examples. Very pleasant to read between hacks.

I thought at first that this was named for Raph Levien ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raph_Levien ) who wrote Advogato in C, some 10+ years ago. But no mention of that in the README or RAPHT. Too bad :)

I think the author assumed readers were programmers. That's OK in a trade publication. Indeed, every programmer should know those numbers.
