If the effect size x site traffic is so small it's statistically insignificant, why are you doing all this work in the first place? Just choose the option that makes the PHB happy and move on. (But, it's more likely that you don&

I've read that there was familiar controversy over player-piano rolls in the early 1900s/late 1800s. They'd be created in the eastern US and then be duplicated out west, potentially putting pianists out of a job.

This seems like a good place to Ask HN: What is the state of Android distros/forks right now anyway? What's the popular works-pretty-well-for-most-people project? What are some obscure or niche gems that could be better known?

Yup. About fifteen years ago there was an explosion in small-run PCB services that cater to hobbyists (and cottage-scale professionals). If you don't need them overnight you can get good quality PCBs made at a very reasonable price.

Because it's literally a polymer of lactic acid? It's safe enough that they use it for medical implants because its degradation products already exist in the body? (Or is this a sarcastic response along the lines of "didn

Charge is conserved, so if your energy input is in the form of (say) a photon, you'll have to produce equal numbers of positive and negative charged particles. Baryon and lepton number are almost conserved, which would require you to

This is a nonlinear filter because of the way alpha is determined. Since this is in SIGCHI, I assume the actual novelty here is "this filter has behavior that feels right to interactive users, (and is also computationally cheap)".

You imply that you have access to some unvarnished truth, unlike the other commenters who are trapped in their bubbles. What is your justification for this belief? Is it possible for other people to have access to this higher truth, or is i

I think even for a white dwarf the Roche limit is well inside the inner edge of the habitable range. So a planet that gets torn apart by gravity would already have been uninhabitably close.

I think there are multiple mechanisms by which genes "activate" and "deactivate", but one of them is methylation, which can to some extent be passed to offspring: this is studied as part of "epigenetics".

I recommend skimming the PLDI paper linked by asmeurer, it has a good summary. Some of its transforms are pretty C-specific, using the Clang frontend; some are pretty generic and probably work on any Algol-descended language. It's mean

You're going to have that problem with any codebase written by people who don't particularly know the language. Typescript written by PHP programmers, Python written by Java programmers, you'll quickly get a huge impenetrable

The door of a microwave typically doesn't form an RF-tight seal. Instead there's a groove that forms a resonant trap at the microwave's operating frequency. So it'll probably block 2.4-GHz ISM-band stuff like Bluetooth (

I think you misunderstand the saying. Information wants to be free — it is naturally so cheap to copy and transmit that its marginal cost is effectively zero. That doesn't mean you want it to be free, or that WIRED wants it to be f

Your comment makes me wonder about the idea of building a superscalar, out of order, speculative implementation of the 6502 or 8080 instruction sets. Might make a good educational project.

Yes, and even chemical rockets make use of the exhaust as effectively coolant. But the problem is that then you have to carry enough mass to carry away heat. And suddenly your rocket is 99% expendable coolant and only 1% payload (or less).
