A lot of wave and tidal motors were built along the California coast in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It's an interesting history. Cheap fossil power made them uneconomical, though. http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2009&#

Intermediate mode: You could program the discrete logic onto a tiny CPLD and probably still hide it inside the 74'193. That way you'd still technically be complying with the "no microcontrollers" constraint.

Definitely. You could make a small hardwired state machine and decode its various states into the behavior you wanted, for example. It would probably take a dozen or so 7400-series logic chips (depending on how complex the easter-egg behavi

Take a look at the PDF version on recon.cx linked by jesrui— it's substantially different from the slideshare version in a few places, notably that it talks about a third generation (Bay Trail TXE) which uses SPARC and drops the pesky

There are things in Deepness that will have more significance if you've read A Fire upon the Deep , but nothing central to the plot. They're both standalone novels, just in the same setting/universe/background.

It's one of the few ways apps can interact with each other under iOS— by telling the system that they can handle particular URL schemes, and having other applications ask the system to open URLs with that scheme. It's kind of ridi

I think there are a couple of things that would have to happen in order for that to work: 1, we would have to set up a global registry for SSIDs, like we have for domain names. (Otherwise, what's to keep someone else from using a colli

CVS was developed in the '80s specifically to get around the locking problem that locking (non-concurrent — that's what the C in CVS is) version control systems had.

err_sys() is something you have to provide yourself, though, which takes you out of the flow of the code you're thinking about, which is half the reason people don't write error handling in the first place. Once I discovered the e

What I do is I generate an inhouse CA for uses like these and hardcode its certificate into the clients: the key used by the API server can then be changed whenever necessary, just as if it were signed by a commercial CA.
