I think the market would punish Apple sufficiently enough for something like that and government intervention wouldn't be required... What about a small, local ISP? Should they be able to refuse to provide service? At what size can

If I'm the sole owner and only employee of a small business, should I have the right to choose my clients? If so, at what size/scale/level of market capture should I lose my rights?

I agree with your assessment of the current situation. But I think the solution is to break up the duopoly, either by leveling the playing field or creating government-run alternatives, rather than force the duopoly to do certain things.

I had never heard the term "jawboning" before. According to Merriam-Webster it is "the use of public appeals (as by a president) to influence the actions especially of business and labor leaders" or "broadly : the u

I guess that will work for the first couple days until, ya know, you run out of electricity... Or maybe the LLM-on-a-stick will teach you how to get the local power plant up and running again before then?

> Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN, told me there's scant data on how often this happens, but it's a real thing. What's with this weird shoutout? What does NordVPN have to do with phone calls?

It would be interesting to trace the memetic growth of this anecdote. I wonder how much is due to its intrinsic characteristics and how much is due to the identity/connections of its participants?

I know it isn't the intended use case but I wonder how this would perform as a censorship circumvention method. The translation alone may be enough of a change to avoid the pattern matching used by firewalls.

B1 then. The point is that there should be some sort of objective measure other than simply "Hey how many languages do you speak?"

Interesting. So the entire UI is contained within a single web view? Does it require a local server "hosting" the site?

It's a VPN... can't do that as a webpage as it requires native API access.

To clarify, I'm using "understand" in a sense similar to the Turing Test. It doesn't matter if the machine actually understands in the same way as humans (or at all), only that it is able to make humans think it understa

I think LLM's support my theory. The reason they are good at translation is because they are already good at simulating understanding in all of the languages they translate between.
