I feel like this is a reality when communicating across any two domains. People have their own problems their mind is busy with, you have to optimize for the least attentive person. That said, this sales-pitch style communication is exhaust

I think graphql is fantastic, and solves tricky design decisions (versioning, precise rest queries). However, I don't believe all graphql client libraries are created equally, and I strongly prefer those that are simpler, and closer to

This is my favourite model. Say you are an illustrator, you purchase photoshop once for 900$ and you update again when the features are compelling. Maybe every 5 years? These are not industries where people make programmer wages. Combining

Internationalization is a strong argument. I don’t like it, but you might be right. I’d still prefer a layer of abstraction between config file keys/comments so your configuration can be localized, but there are additional issues here

I agree and disagree. The driver issue is frustrating, but I think this is mostly a choice of hardware issue. If you can get a wifi chip with officially supported drivers it’s pretty painless. Broadcom, in my experience have consistently be

I still use a non-tiled wm for specific use cases. Openbox is extremely minimalist and customizable. I use it for games, gimp, and occasionally gui application development. You can add directional selection keybindings etc. so it keeps a ti

This is what I love about vim. Ironically, I think that the barrier to writing a plugin that solves your problems is lower in vim than an IDE. Pair that with portability, and you have a cozy environment you can feel safe investing hours int

I’m not sure that is entirely fair. Sure containers like LXC and bsd-jails existed, but I think the feature that won the hearts of devs was the incremental builds that let people fail quickly in a forgiving way. With jails, the best I know

That’s very frustrating. I suppose it would be very expensive to standardize apis at this level where everything is performance critical.

Wow, I had no idea. I wonder why all of the resistance - if not github then even the git protocol over ssh or a samba share.

This is what I’m hoping for. At least, I’ve noticed on the admin side that lower level tools and system calls seem to be more stable and better documented than the abstractions built overtop of them. I think market pressures make this a dif

Re: skill churn I got the impression that there is much less of this in lower level languages. It seems like there is a fairly stable foundation of C, Cpp that everything else is built on top of. I wonder if embedded programmers have this p

I feel exactly the same. I had never played a game before that felt so free. I spent so much time just discovering the world, what you could do. The magic system that invited you to break the game mechanics - at a cost. I love how playful i

I seem to be the minority, but this makes me sad. Personally, I find it much less productive to work in an office, with all of the background chatter, interruptions, distractions, meetings. It's my fourth year of full remote work and I

I agree, but it's not discord's fault. Discord is great at what it does. I find the same social issues with discord, slack, gitter, irc, matrix.org, etc. Chat may be good for the questioneer, but it's bad for search/rete

Thank you very much for this reply! Those are all very good points. You’re right, this is a service, and not having the worry about hardware or scripts at all is valuable when you have a million other things to manage.

I'm not sure, I guess it depends what you're looking for. I'm a hobbyist, with no real professional experience in server admin, so I am probably missing some important things. But most of this can be replicated with ZFS and F
