There's a great quote from the article: "most of your peers wouldn’t even get into the game due to some unspoken belief that in a meritocracy, good things will come to those who wait. Perhaps if you have a union job based on seniority, but

The sad thing is, even if it led to a net increase in death and injury due to the causes you described, the traffic regulators would likely still see it as a gain, because it would reduce the number of "traffic deaths". (Even if it lead to

"Sharding kills most of the value of a relational database." I can appreciate the point the author makes about partitioning schemes requiring heavy integration with the business logic, but I disagree with the claim that sharding doesn't wor

I think this would make a lot of sense for digital frames. The need for a power cord has always been the main thing keeping me from getting them.

I've been in a similar job before, as the lone tech guy, and one small step that really helped me was to require that all work requests be sent by email. I put a sign on the door to my office/server room that said "Verbal requests will be

I absolutely agree - if I'm trying to gauge whether an applicant really knows as much as they think they know, I would ask questions where the interviewee might think "google it" is acceptable, but that would make me trash the application.

In addition to making emergency treatment more efficient, you're also providing valuable decision support to people in some of the most stressful moments of their lives. Anyone who is scared enough or in enough pain to be considering an ER

Even if those ten titles are at the top of the NYT best-seller list? There should be a limit to how many sales are attributable to the Kindle version, which would keep the percentages lower. It would be nice to see the unit sales percentag

Exactly. Reading this article, I kept thinking of the 2000 NCAA tournament, where Florida was pressing hard and winning, and seeming unstoppable. Until MSU stopped them pretty emphatically.

That's funny, I see just the opposite. Apple, as I recall, barely breaks even on the music part of the iTunes store, and makes all their money on iPods. Has that changed? Selling a high-end, upscale device that plugs into Amazon's online

Since Amazon was paying these associates a percentage of sales, wouldn't it be more accurate to say that Amazon financed it?

Frugality is probably relative to the industry you're in. Amazon is a retail company, where margins are low, and the overall health of the company can hinge a lot on managing all the seemingly small expenses that crop up in running a busin

I've heard of people getting "cease and desist" _letters_ (i.e., from the competitor's lawyer) for this behavior, but never an actual C&D order, which is a court order. The general approach seems to be, unless the trademark holder speci

Also, even if StumbleUpon provides targeted advertising, it's still quite likely to be very poor-performing traffic. If you're exposing people to things they were unaware of before, then, by definition, they're going to be very early in th

Re the Mini - that was my experience, too - I'm more than willing to get out the screw drivers to do my own RAM upgrades, but when I need a putty knife just to open the box, I start to get squeamish.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the pseudocode looks funky. Is he really assuming at most one key per bucket? This code seems like it fails when the number of keys in the table exceeds the number of buckets. Assuming that 'table.size' re

Yes, that would be a good argument, but that wasn't the one made in the article. Ehrenreich had a job in Minnesota, which is slightly cheaper to live in than Phoenix, by most standards. Should she still have moved?

From that page: "The Google AJAX Search API lets you put Google Search in your web pages with JavaScript." I've never understood why they call that an API. It's not. It's a web 2.0 widget. Google used to have a SOAP-based API for natural

Agreed. I think this kind of attitude stems from thinking that unit tests are for TDD, instead of for regression testing. This post seems more reasonable if re-stated as, "Here's the unit test that will keep that from ever happening again"

The docs for Amazon S3 state that a bucket can either be kept in the US or in the EU. How precise a location are you needing? (They're not going to have multiple data centers per zip code.) Aside from that, I'm not sure what role you woul
