What kind of communication app worth cracking would not run primarily on Windows machines? That's practically a prerequisite to widespread use.

I've always used the ssh -D proxy as a SOCKS proxy, not a HTTP proxy. It works well, though, and it's dead simple to set up.

As I recall, the bleeding-edge Safari, Firefox, and Chrome JS engines are all pretty competitive. IE and Opera are behind in public, but Opera is writing a new engine. The multiprocess structure and UI are the only real advantages Chrome ha

These are likely above-average comments. The people who would take the time to look at this article and comment instead of skipping over it are probably going to make higher-quality comments. This article does seem to be slightly out of Dig

Social networking isn't search. It's much harder to change social networks than OSes or browsers or what have you. If you plan on switching, you have to get all your friends to sign up and use the service.. and then they have to get all the

Great interview. The page formatting was off, but the interviewer asked some interesting questions which go beyond the usual contemporary Java/Web material.

Perhaps it wasn't the most tactful thing to say, but this is most certainly the right forum to discuss this. His post was about this very situation. It's 100% relevant. While I don't agree with his viewpoint myself, discussing what we want

I may be getting things confused here, but I usually see captive portals do HTTP redirection (looking from a sniffer). That would involve tampering with the headers, correct?

I suspect that Orkut is the Google equivalent of the ROKR, the iTunes phone that preceded iPhone. It's a moderately successful trial until Google can really sink its teeth into social networking, whether through its own service or an acquis

There isn't much of a reason. It's a purely psychological barrier, but it exists, and you have to account for it. Prices are getting lower and lower for mobile apps, and that's just what the market accepts now.

On the contrary, brown rice is more popular than chocolate. Consider that most of the world's population survives primarily on rice with some other protein sources and water.

No, I think that's the firewall modifying the headers. I still encounter the portal page when I use a different DNS (although the portal hostname doesn't resolve). I'm not sure if they have even figured out how to do DNS authentication yet.

What makes you think we're moving toward a Microsoft Internet? It seems to me that we're moving in precisely the opposite direction. Flash is really one of the last few closed holdout technologies.

Censorship is quite a reasonable suggestion for HN. We aren't here to express our political views, we're here to read good content. If a site gets in the way of that, then by all means it should be banned.
