LLMs are amazing at producing boilerplate, which removes the incentive to get rid of it. Boilerplate sucks to review. You just see a big mass of code and can't fully make sense of it when reviewing. Also, Github sucks for reviewing PRs

I worked with a few of those where it was horrible, because they were incompetent and unwilling to work to improve across all disciplines. But that says more about the individuals. IMO "Knowing enough to do damage" is the worst po

I love the explanation in the linked site: > Writing on the internet can be a two-way thing, a learning experience guided by iteration and feedback. I’ve learned some bad habits from Hacker News. I added Caveats sections to articles to

React also has a class of problems that doesn't really happen in other types of apps: re-renders. Even other frameworks like Vue.js, Solid or Svelte don't really suffer from it as much. It simply happens a couple order of magnitud

Yep, that works 100%. I'm still a big believer in "separation of powers" a la Scrum. There should be a "Product Owner" that can be anyone really, and in the other side there is a self-managed development team that d

What's that, a Github employee? Not really, I'm in an YC startup. But I guess the problem is that every single development position has been converging into this. The only times in my career as a developer where I was 100% happy w

At this point "ownership" is just a buzzword thrown around by management types that has no meaning. If a developer has to put up a fight in order to push back against the irresponsibility of a non-technical person, they by definit

The way it works in tech today is that there are three groups: - Project managers putting constant pressure on developers to deliver as fast as possible. It doesn't even matter if velocity will be lost in the future, or if the company

I must have interviewed for at least 4 or 5 of those companies the last couple times I changed jobs. A few of them were YC. I can't find their online presence anymore, or they have pivoted to something else.

Agreed. Another point IME is that the problematic requirements are also often non-essential, such as using a certain in-house framework made by some director, or building the whole project inside some abomination, like the workflow system o

I can attest to that. I used to freelance doing porting about 10 years ago, and the main way of having a stable event loop for a game on macOS is not really anywhere clear in the documentation, at least not anywhere I could find. Libraries

Is this a simple hosted analytics service, where outputs are only accessible by Flo, or does Facebook uses this data in any other meaningful way? If this is used by targeting, I’m afraid we can’t call this just an “analytics service”.

In my experience companies end up paying as much money as they can. The companies themselves are to blame, too: they absolutely refuse to change their processes, so the software must adapt to them, no matter what the cost.

Here's a thesis: Maybe LLMs make you 10x faster at using boilerplate-heavy things like Shadcn/ui or Tanstack. ...which is still only about half as fast as using a sane ecosystem. IMO this is why there's so many diverging opin
