I've been coding in C++ since the 90s, that's also how I feel whenever I'm required to build something using cmake.

I still don't get the point. I come from a part of South American that is majorly white, and has European culture. It used to be "West". Now I can't bring it up without getting lectured by people using weird rationalizat

Totally agree. I can count on my hands the number of developers that actually produce consistent good-looking shit. And the number is *two* if I count the ones who also understand technical nuances, accessibility and proper usability.

Grandparent here. Alright, I totally believe you and everyone else, and would probably also be much happier in a less wasteful environment that you mention. In which industry/company size are you? Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.

Exactly the situation in pretty much every company I worked at in the last 10 years. Fighting the Product Manager, fighting the Designer, sometimes even fighting some micromanaging stakeholder that won't leave you alone. It's defi

Pretty sure there's places doing it, but I haven't really worked anywhere that used a Vanilla framework, except for the first few months, or have used an app that just uses something off the shelf. I'm in the YC startup space

Doesn't match my experience as a developer. I haven't worked in a place that doesn't use Figma, since Figma was released. And haven't worked in a place that didn't get a dedicated designer before the company was 6 m

Companies are definitely not saving money here. They're actually spending a shit-ton of money on designer-hours and developer-hours in order to have everything custom, but still with a subpar experience. It's similar to accessibil

Exactly. Also the "only in the Northern Hemisphere" part goes out the window as soon as Australia is mentioned. It doesn't matter that Canada and USA have strong Native populations, "it's different in the south"

As someone from the southern hemisphere, the only thing more patronizing and infuriating than this is the insistence from the same moralizing group that my country isn’t part of “The West”, despite it being physically and culturally there.

It really depends. Sales people will bend over backwards and will escalate things internally, but once they realize you “need” them (eg: for ads or due to lockin) they stop caring. Used to work in marketing-adjacent teams and know this too

Not people, just the groups who acquire companies. Users still hate Teams.

Totally. I remember a few years ago where every open source or tech group community was on Slack. Today it's almost all Discord. I once even went to a doctor and the staff was using Slack because it integrated with some calendar thing

It is impossible to know these days. I just get flooded with automated messages in random channels by them wanting to chat with me about whatever place I'm a manager at.

People pushing random throwaway packages is not the issue. A lot of the culture is built by certain people who make a living out of package maximalism. More packages == more eyballs == more donations. They have an agenda that small packages

This is incredible. At this rate, there's a non-zero chance that one of the transitive dependencies is SQLite itself.

I don’t see why something being good means it can’t also be stopping innovation. This feels like a misattribution, due to halo effect.

I suspect it’s bimodal. There’s lots of people able to work anywhere on the stack but choose to work on the frontend because they feel super-productive compared to others. They can switch between frameworks and even come up with new ideas.

Do you really need to bribe? The review process from my POV is totally capricious, one can have the shittiest B2B Ionic website-wrapper app that management pushed an intern to do and they will not even login and just slap a LGTM. Have seen

Interesting. My criteria for hiring is the opposite of this, and I wouldn't have it any other way. If someone is technically great but combative in an interview, they get a "strong no" from me. It's nothing big: especial

100% this. Some people are indeed very good at picking up on specific behaviours. The problem is that requires maturity and self reflection, so it's not something you learn in a day. The lesson here should be that trusting one's g

This is a false dichotomy. Places that use the phrase "results driven" as a rationalisation for toxicity are never about results. If a place is really "results driven", then people should be expected at EVERY level, to c

It used to be VERY popular in enterprise, where HR professionals often coming from psychology handle most of the hiring. I have no idea why they did this, I guess that was the idea of a hiring process at the time.

A lot of development work is busywork or just plain inefficient work. Only teams able to shoot the shit have slack for actual emergencies or actual required improvements.
