I assume you responded to some dumb comment where some rural no one took a cheap shot at city dwellers. In Pittsburgh it's hilariously easy to tell who from the area hasn't actually been in the city for 10 - 15 years. Mention East

Or they die off. Which (having grown up there) is infinitely more likely. Their smart kids leave. The one thing they do that's smart is put all their resources into their 'smart' kids (which may not actually be the smartest o

I mean, I can write policy documents all day. Most of them would have had a better life as toilet paper.

I feel dumber for having read this article. Tbf it’s from the early 2000s but it reads like a nasally academic trying to lecture people who work for a living about theory with little to no practical benefit.

That's the connotation, which is why I won't even consider a position billed as 'sysadmin' even if there is a component of it to the job.

From a career standpoint sysadmin is a pejorative term in 2019. I'm the 'not feature code' director at a company that manufactures companies. Meaning 20% of my time is what you describe above. This is along side security work

I mean, I guess I can copy a bunch of unverified AskReddit thread responses, make a website, mix in some javascript, and get a bunch of news.ycombinator karma? Like if OP had gone back and interviewed some of these people and got some valid

It forces you to make products instead of tools. Putting tools behind a paywall is wack.

These responses are just copied off reddit verbatim without validation. I've seen the flight nurse and a couple of others before.

I'm more inclined to spend money on a product that goes out of their way to implement Apple Sign In because I know they're catering to me. It's not going to be the only thing that goes into the equation, but if I have a choic

You're being facetious but much of the time that's the logic. Flip it around, "Why would I spend resources on you if the chance that you're going to generate a return on those resources is minimal?"

'company wide' process is either, 'squeaky wheel gets the grease,' or, 'no one even knows this exists,' 100% of the time in my experience. This is from going from 10k+ to 150 to 5k+ to 50 people.
