The you should see what we do to the Mapuche over here. Last week the Supreme Court confirmed a sentence of three years of _probation_ for a cop who killed a Mapuche activist. Their communities are violently raided with gunshots as a matter

The tutorial looks lovely but... if you have good a relationship with your family or have close friends, wouldn't it be better to spend time with them rather than learning Clojure these holidays? There will be plenty of time for Clojure the

No, the Javascript model is "you name things with `var`, you mutate things with `=`". Python went for a more complicated scheme of having every variable in a function be a new binding when first assigned, and then it's just mutation (i.e. '

@mitsuhiko Not gonna happen ;) Forbidding shadowing altogether is a huge win, and a huge conceptual simplification. Poppycock. It doesn't get simpler than a. newly bound variables are new b. any variable which wasn't bound in the pr

You speak as if 'the public' were unable to be shaped by offer, advertising, the consumption of peers, as if, in the end, consumption wasn't part of culture, and part of a grand feedback loop all of it.

Yes, it was pretty artistic as far as programs linked on Hacker News go, but technically... it was just a bunch of functions and macros which produced formatted strings. Not that it's bad on itself, but the title suggested otherwise.

Maybe you don't like being a procrastinator and you have yet to find a way to help it. Like people with ADHD, in which case it's likely that you got a bad hand dealt to you by genetics.

Oh yeah? Well, by learning Ruby you get all that and you become a Rockstar. Kids love being rockstars. So there. Edit: To the downvoters (and feel free to keep downvoting, if that rocks your boat): the "+1 for Python, because" comments w

That's a bit too cheer-leady of C, and stretches the definition of DSL way too much. Ruby didn't suddenly become a Java DSL when it was ported to the JVM, neither did Perl become a Haskell DSL when Pugs was written. Let's give credit where

It should be noted though that on /prog/ it is considered good manners to use sage as not to bump the thread endlessly to the top of the list. So one can tell which posts are made by outsiders by their overt... impoliteness .

And what change would bring just shutting up about it? Say it, tell it, and change it. Don't all the people subject to the same crap as you deserve the change? Don't the good but misguided people (among some selfish and indolent ones) that

Actually, thermal solar plants can produce electricity 24/7 just fine. They can store heat in water or (more efficiently) molten salt up in a tower and use it to later generate power at a reliable rate. Spain is known to be investing heavil

It should be noted, though, that solar thermal plants can indeed generate electricity during the night, by collecting heat in reservoirs to later produce steam, be them water or molten salt[1] heat reservoirs. [1] http://www.research-in-ge

Here: http://clojure.org/data_structures , see the entry for StructMaps. The page on datatypes* also implies heavily that structs have been phased out in favor of records, as no reason to use structs over records is presented. * http://cl

Well, it seems like you haven't had much exposure to Wikipedia's user-contributed 'guidelines', for which you should be thankful... Wikipedia has lots of rules to prevent their other rules from being refuted, giving leverage to insiders whe

Really? There are quite a few Mono apps that use its GTK# bindings. Their inclusion in the default installs of many mainstream distros has been the cause of much contention with the anti-mono/Microsoft crowd.

Thanks for the response. Well, the thing is, that you shouldn't have to fear for null to creep up somewhere in the code at any time. Sure, if your language (like most, sadly) has null as an alternate value for almost any type you'll have to

You didn't just tell us all that being forced to check for null references strengthens the spirit, now did you? That is akin to saying that being forced to check for buffer overflows is edifying, or that no programmer from a good family use

Clojure is only a Java extension if Java on my machine is an x86 extension. Besides, what's being argued here is that some things should be in the core, not the negativity of an extensible core. I'm somewhat on the fence on the issue. One o
