Yeah, I’d seen higher-frame rate video before, and since (though maybe not again in a movie theater?) but that’s the only time I’ve noticed that particular problem. I spent a little time searching around after I saw it, trying to figure out

I remember one small town post office we frequented wasn’t much to look at outside—brick, but not fancy—but was gorgeous inside. Marble everywhere, including floors, brass everything including solid wood brass-clad exterior doors and fine,

Also saw the first film in 2d in the theater at 48fps, also very excited going in, also felt like everything looked sped-up. What it reminded me of was silent era film that’s been slightly sped up on purpose for comic effect. All the walkin

It’s mostly a recent problem, oddly enough. Only one of the last nine big-two party candidates didn’t go to prep school (Hilary, as you mention). Typically more than half the primary candidates “prepped”, over the same period. Most VPs have

Oh, for sure. The biggest sacrifice isn’t sleep. It’s money. So very, very much money. And having to pare your hobbies down to one or two things to avoid going crazy. Both much worse than any sleep disruption. (But yes, worth it).

Most of the important functionality that’s been added didn’t require the changes to UI that I consider a downgrade.

This makes more sense when one recalls that a whole lot of powerful people, including and perhaps especially politicians, come from a handful of prestigious schools, and are surrounded by advisors and assistants largely from those same scho

If “just soundproof the room” is an option, I’m guessing a night nanny’s in the budget, too. What we did was just one of us would sleep in another room with the monitor, and the other in our normal bedroom. Fan and door closed was all the s

What’s with the soundproofing thing? I don’t follow what you’re getting at. Yes you could solve the problem with soundproofing, but that’s really expensive. Some distance and a loud fan is something more people already have than soundproofe

Nb to observers considering having kids but worried about this, unless you’re badly space-constrained it’s pretty easy to keep sleep for both adults north of 6.5hrs a night, and to have catch-up nights for both on the weekend (9+ hours). Pl

Desktop program UI design mostly peaked in the 90s (search-to-launch becoming ubiquitous is about the only really good thing to happen since then). Desktop web design peaked somewhat later, in the two- and three-column era. ‘00s. It was nic

This can be made better or worse by processes and tools. After years and years in Slack workplaces, I’m now witnessing firsthand how Teams can effectively throw sand in the gears of remote work, simply due to how its UI is designed. The lac

100% of the ~20 people I personally know who were happily doing their entire job just fine from home in 2020 and 2021 were in the 40-90 income percentile range. The ones who’ve totally lost that benefit are mostly on the lower end of that.
