Practical Doomsday, the book form of this post from a few days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30466733 , goes into exactly some of those kinds of considerations. https://lcamtuf.coredump.cx/prep&#x

It's less about technology than about the treatment a civilian population can expect from an occupying force, largely due to ideology. Although humans haven't changed that much since then. It's terrifying to contemplate wh

Not much there, just a chart implying that Ukraine’s military spending is about 20% of Russia’s, after adjusting for some “military purchasing power parity” formula, rather than 10% as numbers might suggest. It doesn’t go as deep as trying

Both wind and hydro convert kinetic energy into electricity and heat. The heat is from the moving parts in the turbines and the power conversion electronics. Heat is a product of just about every energy conversion you can imagine.

There's not a great built-in combobox control, which is a shame. An input type=list element with a datalist comes close: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/da...

Somewhere there is a Windows shell programmer who debugged one too many "not even a crash" shell issues. He's got a 1000 yard stare and all he can say about it is he "saw the cats". Seeing a cat on a fence to this

I'm not even sure who you're replying to. Looking at the other comments plus the front-page ranking, seems as if there's plenty of interest in this map on HN.

Seems like there have been advances, just not in pixel density beyond 160 PPI. The bigger issue than low margins is the "4k" marketing and lack of large buyers other than Apple for 5k displays. I think early on in the 4k hype tra

I'll often do the "first draft" as a design doc with an API sketch or a quick prototype that I'll post in chat or email to the team but not actually "mail for review" per the tool. That way I get early feedbac

As hard and complex as spacecraft are, they seem like tractable engineering problems. The sheer raw complexity of the human built environment and traffic is very daunting for computing. Calculating orbits and rocket burns seems trivial by

It's a bit bigger and heavier than the old 11" MacBook Air models. Lots of people found that one too small. It has a short trackpad because the screen is so short. It still had a full width keyboard though.

Hoping the new MacBook Air redesign comes in smaller than the current 13” model. I’m looking to upgrade from a 2014 11” MacBook Air, which was one of my favorite computers I’ve ever owned, but the performance was never great. Vastly bette

Mississippi's main role is to make Alabama be second from the bottom in state-by-state rankings. I say this having grown up in Alabama and gone to university in Mississippi.
