Interesting comments. First, let me explain that the client side runs entirely within memory; the hard drive is not touched at all. All processing or computation is done within the Java sandbox. In other words, you are not giving us unfe

Hey guys, we just launched our private beta for Plura. I submitted our game page as the HN link, but www.pluraprocessing.com has more general information. Take a look and tell me what you think. We've been paying our alpha affiliates for m

Well, it was a complicated data format for many 10s of GB of seismic data on machines that probably had 32MB or 64MB of memory. The partial sort and merge did the trick for me.

I wrote this algorithm to solve a problem for myself one night about 10 years ago (agree - not a very tough problem, but very useful if you don't have enough memory). I told a client about it and he tried to patent it! I never checked to

Don't do it for the promise of their future activities. There is a chance that they might never deliver (you're the only one in a position to estimate this). Think of it in terms of an equity investment. If they invest $X on a $Y premoney

It's amazingly difficult to make a game that gets traction these days because of all of the competition, but it is definitely getting easier to make money without license fees and subscriptions if you manage to hit paydirt. There is a gold

I've always wanted to do more to "change the world", but I've found that I am ineffective/unmotivated to do so through direct actions via volunteering. I've tried and I'm not good at it. My wife and I used to have many discussions about t

Interesting note - I don't know if it's a typo in the article or not, but 15PB/year is less than one CD per second, not the 6 CDs per second the article states. If the numbers in the article are correct, they might be combining or selecting

100,000 processors is a big-sounding number, but it might be less interesting than the glue holding them together in this case. The dedicated 10Gbps pipe allows much more interesting problems to be solved than a traditional grid computer (

I've always thought that deferred comp was a long shot at amounting to anything. It rarely pans out. I've gone for the "founders never earn more than anyone else" approach through several startups and I've found that it works well. Sometim
