The flaw (or shall I say, "limitation") of this HTA index is that it apparently ties affordability to the median income of the region. I think this would be subject to a kind of selection bias, for example punishing rural areas for employin

I suppose I should be happy that authority figures are getting in touch with technology. That said, I'm pretty sure Bloomberg learning to code marks the peak of the second tech bubble. That, or Ashton Kutcher becoming a VC.

I find the shoplifting analogy decent, but the main flaw I see is that it keeps the discussion framed around crimes being committed and what is the punishment. Even if the punishment is seen as really extreme, centuries of legislation have

'Monopoly' is a good one too. I don't think the terms are mutually exclusive: "They want the Government to create a Prohibition so they can have a Monopoly on content" That said, I do think 'Prohibition' is an accurate description. SOPA may

Agreed. So here's how we do it. This is the word: Prohibition . It's our "death panels". This is how you tell it to grandma: - The music & movie industries want a Prohibition on user-created content. - When radio was invented, th

I'm a fan of the idea of public transit, but, like tptacek, I don't end up using it much. Mainly the trouble is this: - In many situations, even with good public transit available, you're going to want to own a car. - If you do own a car, i

Well, on the bright side there is no "car piracy" that can be blamed for the decline. (Since you can't download a car) Seriously, though, I think there are just a lot of things competing for people's attention, young or otherwise. There are

I'm not a lisp pro (more like aspiring to be), but, for what it's worth, I think your use of eval is fine. It doesn't suffer from the "double evaluation" problem, and evaluation at compile time is actually what you want. If you really want

The 10:1 productivity gap is well established in the academic literature for software engineering. There are not many concrete quantitative statements one can make about the profession, but this is one of them.

Mono didn't work for me. I think it might be okay if you targeted it specifically as your official runtime. But it is not, and I don't think ever will be a drop-in replacement for the MS stuff. I summed up my thoughts here: https://news.yc

The price you're quoting is for the US. I suspect his price has UK VAT or something added in because a similarly spec'd MacBook Air is only $1299 in the US. So it is not "double", we're talking about $200 - an 18% price difference. Furtherm
