You're missing my point. In your example, somewhere you have to express your types. So just move my example over to that point in your code.

This post seems to miss the fact that in Rich's talk he rails on ADTs even more than he does on static typing. Rich's biggest complaint is that our tools should be a la carte not forced down our throat at every turn. Type verifi

Agreed. I prefer the descriptive not prescriptive consideration here. Is refactoring an essential part of your process or no?

“You need to spend 20% of your sprint refactoring.” Yes! Agility is largely a function of (the quality of) your code assets, so much more so than your team processes. And you can’t keep a code asset at quality unless through constant vigila

Any framework that Java and/or Javascript has can be used in Clojure. I guess this is an apples to oranges comparison when you put it that way. Eg, React and Clojurescript are great together; and of course so are many JVM frameworks an

I think it can safely be said by any programmer, at least, that succinctness and terseness are correlated.

I don't see how Clojure is "close to the metal". To me it seems pretty high up in the ladder of abstractions. In Java, we have Lambdas and Streams and some concurrency APIs and Clojure only seems to build _on top_ of these, m

I’ve found the opposite to be true. Good structure yields succinctness.

LOC can be a huge indicator of quality of code imho—would you want to work on a 100k loc app that is more or less crud operations for a specific domain? Etc.

When I evaluate a job, I usually optimize for a few things (position, location, salary, tech) but very TOP of the list (i.e., non-negotiable) is what my sense of happiness as a contributor/developer will be. A very good metric to this

"Intuitive" is too subject. What we're interested in is simplicity . And this is an objective measure. This (A): partial(Math.max, 2) is objectively simpler than this (B): function atLeastTwo(someNumber) {

Spoken like an A-player. It is unfortunately not uncommon to find people who see the world as a fixed bag of A- vs. C-ers (and many of course whom think of themselves in the A category.) But this is a fixed mindset and I think it correlates

This is straight from the cowboy coder's mouth. This is Philistinism, plain and simple. > "...deliver something, anything...", no need to make it good, "teams make things better," anyway. No, no, and no. If you w

I strongly concur. I suspect a so-called expert's ability to solve problems within a domain (i.e., how "expert" they are at that domain) would be a function of their ability to manipulate terms in that domain which to me is a

For posterity, I just answered my own Q. Performance overhead was just the cost of the linear cost of vec realization as you pointed out. At first it seemed like I was seeing additional overhead.

The performance disparity is even more dramatic on my machine. What's the reason for that - is it b/c of concurrent contention during vec/realization? Or ???

Fair enough. In my experience it is rare to need library X and to have such an array of choices that LOC suddenly becomes the differentiator.
