I’m advocating for improving that efficiency if it is indeed improvable (my intuition says it is by a large margin.) What I’m saying is that the notion of ‘fairness’ should have little relevance to improving this side of things.

Nobody is striving toward ‘hiring fairness’ ... don’t believe any person who says that’s what they are after. Better outcomes, better industry productivity, sure. But ‘hiring fairness’?

I love this. I think evaluating/interviewing is hard, should be much more about experience and past projects but so what if the industry has got it wrong, so what you have to study a little to get the job? The world is what it is. I th

Advocating programming constructs as a kind of ‘policing’ against bad developers doesn’t work for me. It usually ends up at odds with better objectives & heavily taxes conscientious developers, for whom we should really be optimizing th

Interestingly I agree w/ a preference for empty semantics over null semantics, but NOT for the reason "avoid NPE". Rather, I think minimizing branching/forking in the code logic is how complexity is reduced. For this sam

Here here. I’ve heard “but null pointer errors!” countless times to justify one’s coding approaches (eg, strong typing, Maybe/Optional invasion, this or that PL, ...) People will murder all kinds of productivity to avoid potential NPEs

This truth v. fiction binary is common thinking but far too simplistic. The idea that there is just a set of facts on one side of the fence and on the other is all the lies -- and the dumb hoi polloi just tends to always go for the "ba

I think there’s a parallel to art. And effective teaching being like art. You can’t formalize the artists process — or dictate a medium preference — without taking away the artist’s effectiveness.

Thanks for your reply. The Euclid’s Elements example seems possibly a good anchor for discussion. However I think the difficulty/effortfulness/dynamism of the learning process should signal that the communication/teaching s

They could choose a Saas service (Dropbox, iCloud, WinBin/whatev). Hell, I'd probably do this but encrypted where I like. In this way you'd have the data storage decoupled from the app so the choice would be there.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. There are SOOOO many options and all of them fall short. This one falls short in the extreme. I.e, no Windows support & it seems mobile-focused not desktop-focused. Not trying to be harsh and
