For those projects I just ran backups of the file system. Linode does it for $5/month. If your data was worth anything you'd also be using replication in which case the single server durability point becomes moot.

I equate generalist with "specialist in more than 1 field". When I hear someone describe themselves as a generalist in the web industry, I assume they would be able to easily get multiple job offers in at least 2 of the following areas - I

Always wanted to make an RPG game using sprites. Anyone ever tried? I made a prototype a while ago just to demo some sprite movement while messing around with Node.js (it's concurrent multi-user): http://rpg.sleeperbot.com/

I agree, although I'm contemplating providing 2 UIs, an HTML5 version and an IE-friendly version for my own projects.

I had to restart my node servers almost on a daily basis because of this bug. Was about ready to jump on Erlang myself ironically (building a stream server with mochiweb). Glad I read this and will give Node.js some more time to mature.

I've spent a good year developing with Pylons and this question of recommended production setup comes up about once every couple months in the official mailing list. Paste is considered by far the worst option in terms of performance, whic

Not true. Production deployments in Pylons are primarily done with mod_wsgi behind apache or in some cases uwsgi behind nginx. Paste is generally not recommended outside of development purposes.

Where are the "MongoDB is Web Scale" jokes? crickets. If you are not using MongoDB, you are missing out badly and are probably developing at a much slower rate than someone who is.

Most sites have a player ID. If you map the player ID the aliases won't matter. Just keep that name data on your end and it will be consistent. Getting accurate real-time data is not a hard problem. The real problem is coming up with the

It's a lot more than 4 figures. Getting just the basic data will be in the 5s, and that's per season of 1 sport. Maybe I suck at research but after talking to the reps about pricing, 4 figures would be an absolute steal.

Don't post stuff you don't want other people to see - plain and simple. Someone could just as easily have copied and re-uploaded it. Hope this topic doesn't devolve into Facebook-bashing.

I think so too. It always confuses me when I see companies look for UX and UI as 2 separate things. The more layers of designers you introduce to the process, the more likely it is for the main concept to be lost in translation. I like T

There is nothing bare-bones about Django, Drupal, RoR, etc. Node.js is about as bare-bones as you can get without getting into C.
