Thanks for your suggestion. At the moment I am looking into bulk operations for categories. But I might give it a go later. Not sure how fast it will be. It would need to run on 400 MByte of text!

Really difficult to track are issues caused by things like the map function now returning an iterator object. I.e. the content of the iterator is empty on second use. Python 3.4.3 (default, Oct 14 2015, 20:28:29) [GCC 4.8.4] on linux

Many languaged have rational numbers (fractions) and big integers in their stack. This has the advantage that one has full control over where and when to trade off performance against accuracy.
