I went through this recently and have come out the other side with a successful new venture. It took some self reflection, humility and creativity to get here. What did it for me was putting aside my ego and realizing that maybe my ideas we

Too much clicky, clicky for something that could be scripted. It's the main reason I always roll my own CMS instead of using something like Wordpress. Bloated/confusing interfaces can be cumbersome and actually slow an engineer do

Belief is similar to an idea but a little different. An idea is similar to a theory while belief is more similar to an absolute. This is why belief goes hand in hand with religion and faith; which are two other concepts that I dislike. Thin

True, there are believers on both sides. Also I agree that network news is saturated with falacious content meant to do nothing but divide and manipulate. I honestly can’t remember the last time I watched network news of any type but I assu

The issue for me is that both Trump and his followers operate off of belief. In my opinion, belief is the most dangerous force in the universe. It leaves infinite room for manipulation. No amount of evidence can change the mind of someone t

Whenever I get similar feelings to this it usually means I’ve been working too much and I’m burning out. After days on a coding binge, code starts to look like spaghetti that I can neither make heads nor tales of. After taking a break and d

Our startup is located in El Paso and it's super hard to find senior devs here. I had to start teaching programming classes at our local maker space to find our first hire. After a few months of teaching I cherry picked the most promis

I've documented our stack and how things are connected but I've found it difficult to promote employee contributions. How do you incentivize contributions to documentation?

Good points. Your description is largely similar to my own experiences. On number #6, do you mean that the code base deviates from what is in production? IMO if staging has deviated from production then your pipeline is broken. There is not

Having a staging environment is pretty standard these days. We set one up from day one at our startup. It doesn't really take much effort and your app benefits from being decoupled from the domain. This allows you to run app instances

I always split my time between a day job and a passion of building startups. My startups all failed until I finally took the leap and fully committed by leaving my cushy tech day job and went all in. It was super hard being self funded and

I used to believe the same as you and wrote quite a few web apps with dedicated backends and frontends. The overhead and amount of redundancy doesn’t seem worth it to me anymore though and I’ve turned to hybrid apps. Development time has dr

It’s a great approach for hybrid web apps. I didn’t want to go with a React only frontend where routing is controlled by react-router. I’ve opted instead to leave the routing to Turbolinks. This has a number of advantages. I get the benefit
