Perl is for having work done in a minimal time. If you want to write code that is easy to read, learn Ada. Python is probably a better balance. Perl is wonderful for all the small scripts I need every days. When something needs to be reused

As far as I understood, the release notes were not very explicit or complete (the list of impacted functions were missing) on this issue. Recently I have encountered a problem with redhat migration: /usr/bin/X11/xwd was "moved" to /usr/bin

This study is flawed: the usefulness of type system is not for initial development of a small system, it is for the maintenance of huge code base. The fact that type system had very small cost for initial development of small system should

Even if it does not fit the Gnome agenda, there is a way to make everyone happy: just add an annex section in Gnome documentation describing how to configure all the tweaks asked by Linus. This "Linus section" would be useful for many peopl

I try to use perl instead of sed, awk, bash each time the needs are beyond basic usage. This applies also sometimes for xargs for example with the following command. find . -name junk\* | perl -nle unlink My favorite usage of xargs if for p

The problem is that the prerequisite does not apply only to you, but also to all your team. It is ok to use C++ for lower level programming with performance requirements if all the development team knows very very well C++. Even if you fill

Of course, if you are a C++ programmer, you should migrate to C++11 as soon as possible. But do not forget that the improvements given by C++11 do not void all the reasons to not use C++ at all. Avoid C++ if you can.

Stupid article. Why would you hate goto ? You should learn that goto exists and use it when it is the best choice. When writing software manually, this is rarely the best choice, but for automatic generation of code, this is very powerful.

I have stopped when I read "The concrete syntax of Standard ML [16] and Haskell [17] are every bit as bad as C++". The author definetely has no understanding of PL issues or has a huge bias toward C++ insane syntax.

Depth of code nesting can be reduced using many syntactic tricks. You have shown the use of multiple return. This trick is generally considered as a hidden goto (go to the end of the function). 'GOTO considered harmful' is practically bibli
