#perl was interesting to follow when I was into it and helped me when I was learning the language and had, like, intermediate level questions, I remember I also had a general question about stuff sysadmins would know about and got help ther

Good point! The "whites and blacks" division and even the word racism are very Western and assume a context of colonisation. I bet there are many omissions like that in all the countries Facebook operates in, and doesn't know

I guess both are a slightly different phrasing of the same thing - they're aligning their moderation effort in some way, but I'm not sure why you choose it. If it's okay to ask: has anti-white racism been a significant proble

@rags2riches I'm with you against these authoritarian structures built around redistribution. But one can (and you, too, can) treat some groups of people a little better without literally giving them stuff, creating weird power structu

I like this distinction of class and privilege you've made, I think it's interesting how they differ and how they're similar. What do you think about the argument that in a knowledge economy, a person's "privilege&q

Well I do, I think groups of people who were treated badly in the past should now be treated a little better for a while. It's not enough to say, okay, let's all be fair from now on. I think this misses the acknowledgement of all

I'm not sure, I think someone there has realised schools could essentially sell visas - if the course is fully online, the student just needs to pay for it, so they don't really need to be a real student. I'm all for opening

I'm Polish - a post-Soviet block country - and I enjoy a good statue toppling! Why has it taken the US so long to start removing statues of racists, slavers, and shitty men from the bad times when they still had power? Poland changed

There's only so much that can be grown and mechanically harvested, and the US surely excels at producing maize, wheat, or soybean, but vertical farms don't try to compete with those. The production of other crops does not happen i

Kropotkin's Bread Book is about exactly that! He claims any revolution will be as successful as its ability to feed everyone, and tries to outline a path to it.

I like that people's personal sites don't have to be optimised for pleasing users and hence have so much variety to them, it's the one bit of the old internet that we still have with us

That seems like the kind of program for which it is much better to be delivered through a website with some Javascript on it. No need to get the whole classroom to download anything and stuff.

Also, because there's a whole culture of one-liners in Perl, you can also conveniently import libraries and call them: Even though there's frequently value in adding whitespace to programs, many of them are just fine as one liners

Some man pages are pretty interesting, like the ones for Perl if you use the language. You could also become really, really good at using a text editor, it becomes a bit of a game and it's going to be useful for as long as you are plan

Lindy's effect comes to mind: immaterial things that were around for a long time, are still likely to be around for a long time. So, using text files for storage could be really good, if possible. A desktop application could be written
