When you're that tiny, does anyone notice or care? You can grandfather your favorite users into free accounts and, worse case, you piss off all 10 of your users.

Probably more than 500 lines. Doing information extraction on all those different sites probably involves quite a few scripts and doing search on the scale and at the speed they're doing undoubtedly involves backend services too. When they

It's always fun finding 10-year-old, embarrassing news articles or pictures of someone. :) Also, if you're one of the many people who use MySpace instead of Facebook, those drunken pictures aren't behind a wall.

Python: http://www.michael-noll.com/wiki/Writing_An_Hadoop_MapReduce... Ruby: http://blog.rapleaf.com/dev/?p=16 It's pretty hokey, either running through the shell or calling a REST service through a proxy, but it's been done if you're

Really cool. Hadoop is pretty mature and Yahoo's shown it works well on large clusters, but it can be a bear to install, maintain, and learn. I'm sure many companies wouldn't hesitate to pay a few bucks to get another company to help them

The first comment on the article brings up a good point too. Rather than spamming everyone who links to you, you can also just change the bad URL into a 301 redirect, redirecting to where you want that URL to go, and Google will pick that

280 Slides is a brilliant technological feat and I would never be bold enough to attempt something like Objective J, but I have to say, I don't see the point of 280 Slides and Google Presentation. Perhaps it's because I'm a PowerPoint fan

Apparently Woot's been doing stock ticker-based SEM for a while: http://www.brentter.com/wootcoms-new-adwords-campaign-offens... It got them a free TechCrunch mention too, so who am I to argue.. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/10/08/are-t

AKA why you shouldn't evaluate testers based on the number of bugs fixed and developers based on the lines of code written (though I know places that still do both those things).

People are obviously opposed to a bad manager assuming he can do your job better than you can. But I think DHH's point is to avoid the opposite extreme, small companies that over-hire into positions that an existing employee can easily per

It's the cost of entertainment. As opposed to slots, you get to interact with a live person (the dealer) who's there to keep you entertained, and you get to hang out with your friends. There's a little at stake, which keeps things interes

Here's the big Thrift/PB comparison table: http://stuartsierra.com/2008/07/10/thrift-vs-protocol-buffer... Personally, I like Thrift better. More languages and greater community participation.

I think you're confusing Bebo and Meebo. The co-founder of Bebo was on that panel and Bebo is written in Java.

It's not totally crazy. I think Meebo's mostly written in C++, for instance, since they're always looking for C++ and JavaScript people but they never mention scripting in their job ads: http://www.meebo.com/jobs/openings/server/ I thin

Interesting, it's really similar to the iPod Touch: - Wifi/a browser - App store Only I guess you get a camera instead of an MP3 player. ( http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/02/nintendo-dsi-vs-psp-3000-v... ) I wonder what the standard will be

For the counter-argument, read this by Raymond Chen, a developer on the Windows Shell team: http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2005/01/14/352949.... (In a nutshell, he argues it's really hard to write exception-safe code)
