I wasn't arguing against open source. I agree with you on that subject. But there is a point where you make a device so secure that it can be very difficult to connect with anything.

It's fine to say we want everything as secure as possible. But what about the tradeoff between a system being easy to connect/use and making it so difficult to connect that hobbyist users can't get the device to work. If you

I think a lot of this is technical debt. They built the feature/page/whatever code and it works "good enough". Now a future programmer three years later tells the business manager that they can do this much better now fo

I like this analogy. Lets expand. These soufflés take two months to bake but you need soufflés every day for sales. What does this mean? You always have 2 months of soufflés in various states of production at all times. Now you lose power a

I run my own energy monitoring business. We use many RPi's for remote customer site energy meter data collection and forwarding to our cloud based REST servers. Once we got over the SD card issues, I have had zero problems and no hardw

Excel is a great proof-of-concept tool where non-programmers can prove their point. Unfortunately proof-of-concept tools often end up being the end result because .... it works good enough.

I also looked into building a new report and did not succeed because of documentation issues.

I have been using GnuCash for about three years after Quickbooks Online substantially raised their rates. It's a great free alternative for a one person company. I would not want to use it for personal finances though. As others have s

I am teaching a college course on web development later in the spring and teaching raw SQL will be one of the main segments. I will discuss a few ORMs to make the students aware they are out there but we will not teach one in the course.

I have always lived in the US and Canada but was on a driving vacation in Germany in the past year. I did hours of Autobahn driving at 160kMh/100MPH. The drivers are MUCH more courteous in Germany. ALL Trucks are in the right most lane

Documenting what you have been told verbally is not a negative act. People forget what they have said all the time! Generating a followup email is stating your understanding and interpretation of a verbal conversation. Verbal communication

Our IoT service uses the RPi2. We will move to the RPi3 when our stock runs out. In our B2B application, the Pi's are just headless data collectors and all C code and data normally runs in RAM with the SSD card only written to as a bac

In my opinion, QuickBooks Online will do almost everything painlessly. The only thing you will complain about is the price if you are a small or one person company. If I all of a sudden had a couple of employees, I may go back to QB Online.

I have been using it for a couple of years now after refusing to pay QB Online $40+ per month. The GUI needs some work but it is functional. Navigation to find things is not always easy for daily tasks. I have not looked at the recently rel

32,000 people die every year in car accidents in the US alone. If automation reduces that by only half, that's 80,000 lives saved. The real problem in the press is that these crashes are like plane crashes; rare but catastrophic.

I have used PostgreSQL for 12 years. Early on I tried a few ORMs and I found them to be just something else to learn. If I had any issues, I had to figure out how it was all working on the SQL back end anyway. My recommendation is to just d

You are correct except that doing this over 10 years somewhat removes the 'ignoring the volatility' argument.

I got the same. Just a blank screen. When I clicked on the menu selections to edit the configuration files, it just opened another empty window. Windows 10 latest.
