I think reality means that the Facebook business is based on stuffing as much near-relevant garbage at you as possible, which is much harder over RSS.

I'd imagine it works like a Transputer, and the only accessible memory is local to the chip, with communications including data coming down the serial links.

Yeah, similar experience here, but when every web browser (to some approximation) includes Javascript, you can hardly say that programming is inaccessible. In most every possible way (except possibly writing files), Javascript simply wipes

I was sitting in the David Russell Hall tv room in St Andrews watching the stock market crash and various students get financially wiped out.

If you notice though, everywhere, including the UK, now has vans full of armed SWAT-type cops, ready to roll at a moments notice. Un-armed my foot! (pun intended)

Thank-you, I've spent a pleasant morning researching and actually reading Carson's entire book in PDF. Pretty much confirms what is pretty obvious. You don't want to be stopped, and if you get stopped, don't piss off guy

Why would you do this, instead of just building something on the metal? On a slow platform (ok, an iPhone!) serialization of a 20 field object to a file is approximately 50x faster than running an update statement against SQLite. You are gi

I budgeted about $30k for 3 years off (my wife continued to work), made between $10k and $20k/year from my FemCal app, then went back to work when the $30k ran out. No regrets.

I'm not so sure. A Chromebook provides a significantly better experience than an iPad, at least for me and my wife. Our iPad 2 is now almost exclusively the province of my toddler daughter.

I run a HP Z620 Workstation with a bunch of processing power as my daily. This is HP's 'Mac Pro'! I'm guessing it serves to keep the HP boffins doing cool things. It has 16 GB memory and a XEON on a daughter card (and the same again on the

Yikes! $500 and $600 is a lot for an ARM in a little box. Hardware does appear pretty nice, but for that money...

I wait for the DVDs. I'm not a believer in piracy. My issue is that if I could subscribe to just HBO, I would. It's the other 200 channels of DishTV's slops that I don't want coming into my house.

The service is built, but does not work, unless you already have a cable subscription, even in the US. There's no way, to the best of my knowledge to legally watch Game of Thrones, besides buying it on DVD/Blu-Ray or actually subscribing

Can't mod this up enough. Microsoft's crazy-ass xml build mechanism is a giant pain in the ass, even compared to their old nmake (I think) tool. The new system is a great example of a system where someone presumably said "Make is garbage, a

I have to put in a good word for the Samsung here. My wife's MacBook finally died, so she got a ChromeBook as a stop-gap, but in reality, it's really all she needs for basic surfing, Google Docs/Drive and watching CBS streaming (for stuff n

Interestingly, this guy http://www.amazon.com/Nova/e/B002YU0QTE/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=13... covers fairly extensive use of bicycles in his post-apocalypse USA novels. I know many of these comments are somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but really, the

T-Mobile is pretty reasonable. Unlimited data, with 2Gigs at 'high' speed for $40 / month, with 1000 minutes and unlimited texting. Pretty decent deal. This is one of the 'Value' plans, with no subsidy.

Look at how the Chumby is now useless, as an example. The original iPhone is still useful if you are a dev, but not so useful for regular people, as many apps can't run on it any more.
