"Dislike the average Russian" I find that quite surprising, actually. I absolutely don't dislike a Russian I don't know. How could I? Maybe I don't understand this correctly. I'd like to know more about this fe

I had great fun and intense tech time working for astronomers. Ideally, the telescopes are located in remote areas. This led to the engineers and programmers out there, too, or perhaps the nearest college town. https://NRAO.edu

Emeryville started as a mudflat on the Bay where they'd drive cattle to slaughterhouses and leather tanners. It smelled real bad so they did it way out in the middle of nowhere. It sort of became the place for messy industry, when just

I live in a four-plex apartment, but surrounded by other low-rise apartment buildings. There are at least 27 WiFi networks in the 2.4 GHz bands that all dance to share bandwidth. 5 GHz is dramatically better for us, more channels and less c

They've recently passed on, but I'm pretty dang old, so it's ok. My relationship with my mom was really strained, during my transition from living at home to college. Improved dramatically soon after.

Interesting. I've resisted the pull of the Nix side so far... There's a similar package that auto-pulls dependencies for Swift scripts, but it requires you to explicitly state the external dependencies as comment annotations. The

So far, Western economic sanctions have hastened the decline of the use of the US dollar as a means of exchange, especially among Russia, India, and China. This transition has severe short-term disruption for Russia, but a wartime (sorry, &

First, congratulations! It's a paper worth HN attention. Very cool. Second: do Hacker News posts form a small-world network? I don't know. I don't even know if my question is well posed (it might be a meaningless question). D

I guess it comes down to the fact that no one gets paid to fix anything. Visual redesign, sure, the client will pay for that. Fixing an existing visual design when problems are reported? Nope. And as @gwern mentioned, https://new

The utter frustration is real. One reason that Target Display Mode has faded away could be a real, tech hardware issue: retimers required to drive the High-DPI displays on recent Macs. It's not a satisfying thread of speculation. And

Very fond memories of the Foothill College Swap Meet. With that and Weird Stuff Warehouse, I was able to put together a complete TRS-80 Color Computer rig in a matter of hours. The cassette recorder cable was a particularly nice find.
