There's Goodhart's law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure."

I don't want my fries and milkshakes to await. I want them to be made fresh when I order them. Silly robots.

Do you mean CBP? TSA likes their power trips but they don’t get to really interrogate people. I certainly can’t blame anyone who doesn’t want to connect through the US, especially now.

Your phrasing is very strange. Nobody threatens anyone else does indeed sound ideal.

This sounds like a criticism, but non-threatening seems like a really good thing.

Even nuttier is the one from the Peacekeeper. Float a perfect beryllium sphere in fluorocarbon. Use thrusters to keep it oriented. No gimbal lock, because no gimbals. Six million dollars per unit, in 1987 . So good that a system with liter

That’s the fun thing about the Wager. If the reward is infinite then any finite cost is worth it for any finite probability of obtaining it. Pascal did actually consider other religions. He just concluded that they were definitely wrong. In

I agree with the overall sentiment, but having an HOA app go down around the time when dues need to be paid could be a serious issue.

The Wager doesn't attempt to prove God, it merely states that you might as well worship, because the cost is small and the potential payoff is huge. It falls apart because, based on what's actually known, there's no reason to

The exposure was brief, too. Wikipedia says mesothelioma has been known to develop from exposures of "only" 1 month. That's a scary short time if it's in your home or workplace, but comfortably longer than an Apollo miss

That's silly. My car is not absolutely guaranteed to turn left when I turn the steering wheel left, but you wouldn't say I can't control my car on that basis. Steering an LLM with a prompt is way less reliable than steering a

Not believing that a prompt is an effective way to actually control their behavior is obviously incorrect to anyone who's actually used these things. It's not a guaranteed way to control their behavior, but you can more than m

It's very difficult to overcome the push to teach the tools that will be used (or that out-of-touch people think will be used) professionally. We see the same issue in non-game programming where a lot of places start by teaching Java,

They don't even need to do anything. LLMs are effectively random anyway. Even ignoring temperature and inadvertent nondeterminism in inference, the change in outputs from a change in inputs is unpredictable and basically pseudorandom.

I mostly think the US system is too punitive, but I don’t see a problem here. Someone died because of what he did. He did it deliberately and the death was a foreseeable outcome of what he did. I’m not too upset that he spent two decades in

Higher IQ would correlate with an increased ability to predict the consequences of one’s actions. “If I stab this person I will go to prison” versus “if I stab this person everyone will think I’m great because that person sucks.”
