Doesn't this accidentally back up the 'third party frameworks lack quality' argument? iTunes for Windows is generally considered to be a lousy piece of software. Same with Safari for Windows, another piece released under the same approach

If that's going to work, they're going to have to charge advertisers sufficiently high rates. Online advertising rates are a joke compared to print ad rates. It seems absurd to me that newspapers are willing to ask individual consumers to

What level of student do you teach? I'm curious if they've been conditioned to not get off the lesson plan because they know it's not worth the effort and it won't be on the test anyhow.

Looks like a good start. Almost everyone I know who works in a cubicle enjoys talking about how much they hate it. Good call on allowing stories to be submitted without logging in. You might want to add an image uploader, but I assume it'

That last one isn't a bad idea. Remember that our teachers are people who are formally educated in teaching, not necessarily in the subjects which they're asked to teach. Especially in the early grades, a teacher has to be a generalist. S

Is there a valid proof that x * 0 = 0? The definition of multiplication under the Peano axioms makes it axiomatic.

Given the number of ADA's the Panic guys have, not to mention the Founders Room in their offices, this kind of detail and design flair is completely believable.

I don't know that memorizing the facts will prove to be important, but I suspect that having been exposed to them at some point will be. In the article she talks about early US settlement. Her daughter probably won't spend a lot of time a

Seconded. I've only been doing it for about a year, but I really love fencing. It's the only sport I've done where I tend to laugh when the opponent scores a point because they out-clevered me.

Also in my top UI books shelf: Jenifer Tidwell's "Designing Interfaces". It's about patterns that show up in UI and when it's appropriate to use them. I browse it whenever I find myself with a UI issue that I'm not sure how to deal with.

Learning another programming language will almost always make you a better coder. It gives you perspective on the language you spend most of your time in, and lets you see patterns that are non-obvious is your 'main' language. To really be

I'll concede defeat on this one. I've heard most of those examples but they never even occurred to me. Other than my grandparents generation, I _never_ hear temperatures in Farenheit. Weird.

The only three things I hear referred to in inches are height, woodworking, and paper sizes. Everything else tends to be metric. (23, lived in BC/AB/SK/MB/PQ/NB, your experiences may vary.)

Value Villages are predominately Canadian. It's possible that the records weren't the problem, but that the girl wasn't used to inches.

I've been working on a little notification app idea. You create an account with a web service. That account gives you a unique email address to forward all your notification emails to (presumably with automated rules) or to just set as yo

Though I don't think every show is relevant to HN, I don't see any problem with submitting individual videos. Compared to some of the blog posts we see, Ze Frank videos are full of content.
